the better question might be "Who were the Dirty Refs?"
Britain sure has had a few 'In the Pocket' Refs over the years.

As I said above, Benn vs Gman. What the hell happened in Britain that night. I don’t care if the ref was a frog and knew no English, he can see Benn punching him in the back of the head and doesn’t deserve to play “I am a victim in all this, what differently could I have done?” How about foul the ****er breaking the rules you c*nt.

Yep, he was at his dirtiest against Ruddock. Probably trying to slow him down cos Razor hit so damn hard.

Yeah, Gomez's thing in the Pintor fight was following through with elbows, he was very blatant about it.

Pedroza against Laporte was a sham. Pedroza did get points deducted but so much was overlooked. Anyone not a WBA favorite son would have been disqualified.

Esubio Pedroza was a master of fouling tactics.
He alway knew exactly where the ref was, and
    his blind spots.
Lacing, stepping on opponents feet, elbows
,head butts, holding and hitting, low blows,
thumbing, all those tactics were used against Juan Laporte.
Laporte was so meek in his responses to the fouling and
continued to complain to the ref.
This fight showed me Laporte didn't have that "dog" in
him to be great, though he had great ability.

I don't know if I'd call the behavior dirty but Ali's penchant for holding behind the head comes to mind as cheap behavior at the least.

The frustrating thing for me is the fact that Pedroza really didn't have to fight dirty. He was so slick and skilled that it just seemed unnecessary.
