That’s really cool. I was just looking at his Wikipedia page, and I see where his family moved to New Zealand when he was around 10, so that must be why I was getting it mixed up.
Yeah man, idk how anyone whose a supposed fan of boxing wouldn't appreciate his style... When you come to think of it, many of the top fighters of the last 25 years had very unique, hard to replicate styles... Mayweather, B-Hop, Ward, Calzaghe, and Jones... Of all those guys Calzaghe had arguably the most fan friendly style with a high output offensive and average defense.. Plus he is one of the fighters to have mastered taunting and showboating during a fight...where as many guys showboat as a nervous defensive tact when they are afraid to engage, Calzaghe would showboat right before or right after he put a blistering combo onto an opponent. He even clowned Hopkins, which I never seen anyone else do. All in all, much respect to Calzaghe, he has a Fan here in America
Interesting topic this, there's a lot of old timers that on paper look to have done amazing things,… Jimmy wilde, Kid Lewis, Randolph Turpin… but i'm no expert on them.. there's also a host of great amateurs who leave you wondering what could they have done… Three-time Olympic gold medallist Laszlo Papp turned pro but had his career cut short… another one was twice gold medallist Oleg Saitov … He was a phenomenal fighter but never turned professional.. I can only really go on what I've seen personally though, and the likes of Calzaghe, Usyk, Loma, Wlad , Kovalev, Dariusz, Fury, Benn, Froch etc.. guys like that stand out for me.. & of course there is Lennox, but is he Canadian or British?
