I remember against Benitez, Benitez tried to stay on the ropes like he did with Duran and won rounds doing that in that fight, but Hearns would not do it and would stay in ring center.. It was a funny scene. Tommy shaking his head saying nope I am staying in the middle.
But Canelo wasn't effective at landing clean hard effective punches, that's why he landed in single digit numbers in pretty much every round. And was hitting Bivol's arms and gloves most of the night. Quality can beat quantity as Canelo did vs Golovkin in there rematch, some preferred Canelos harder punches over Golovkin's more consistent jab, and theres nothing wrong in that. But that wasn't the case in this fight, Canelo wasn't able to penetrate Bivols defence with his hard punches. As evidence by all the red marks on Bivols arms and according to the stats. That's why Canelo in some of the later rounds was frustrated, and tried to get Bivol to open up by going to the ropes, but Bivol just kept to his boxing and tight defense. And it was a very frustrating night for Canelo, who landed even less punches on Bivol than he did Mayweather I believe.
You’re right, my bad, would’ve been a draw if Canelo won the 12th 10-9 or a win if 10-8. On the HLs I definitely saw Canelo backed up - there was clear power in Bivol’s punches - which, on appearances in terms of execution, might’ve appeared more innocent than they were - but he was the naturally bigger guy, not needing to necessarily grunt with every shot - but still throwing uniformly powerful shots all the same. You mentioned Canelo coming back up after a mid round lull in another fight. Have you seen him fatigued in other fights as you believe he was vs Bivol? I mean, if the fatigue seemed peculiar, then we also have to look to his competing at the higher weight as peculiar (only 2nd time at LH?) and the distinctive nature of Bivol’s own quality performance atop that. Even before the fight, I think the winning performance expected of Canelo was OTT., not a slight on Canelo, it was just imply unrealistic - therein lies the so called “upset” that actually wasn’t IMO. Wow! Leonard not getting a lot of respect here. Not my favorite fighter at all, but an absolute killer. When Canelo gets gassed, mid rounds like clockwork, Leonard destroys him. We're not talking Mayweather.

I didn’t see the Canelo-Bivol fight yet. Considering the fact that Alvarez has had a substantial career already it’s unlikely that a single fight will change my opinion. Particularly since Canelo lost to a bigger man and is pushing the limits of his capabilities. I give Alvarez credit for taking risks against larger opponents and fighting often. He’s lost only 2 bouts out of roughly 60, one to the best fighter of the past 20 years and another to a pretty good light heavyweight. I still feel he will end up in Mexico’s top 3.—Mark

From round five on, maybe. He was arm punching and Canelo was throwing hard in the beginning, hence the lost rounds early.
I'm aware of his am experience. He might be the least experienced guy to have won a title at 154. Even David Reid has him covered with in that department.
Throwing hard and not landing. Clean jab > Blocked punches. Upset is determined by the betting odds, nothing more. Had Kovalev beaten Clenelo that too would have been an upset.
