Until the 80s, boxing was the king of all sports. The world champion was the most famous star. Tyson, Leonard, Ali. But now boxing is DEAD. nobody watch boxing. It is no longer comparable to basketball and football.

Boxing was never the #1 sport in the US - but it was much more popular & globally watched than it is today. Anyway, the first way to make boxing great again is to mandate that all champions & top contenders fight each other. No ducking, dodging or excuse making should be tolerated by fans or boxing commissions. Next, promoters need to commercialise their top stars & contenders. Back in the days (atleast up until about the 90s) contenders were well known (Quarry for example) & had solid media appeal. If promoters focus on the top contenders, (& not just one or two stars) then boxing as a whole will benefit from this.

You hear a lot of old timers claim boxing was the number one sport in the US back in the day early 1900's to I guess the 50's. I haven't researched it enough to know, pretty sure at some stage it was then Baseball took the mantle until basketball and NFL took that over. Cut i back to the original weight classes, one champion only, maybe keep cruiserweight and have a minium weight class. Say 10 weight classes, 10 champions known the world over.

Surely a lot more fans are watching boxing today, globally, than (for example) back in the 1920s - which many consider the heyday of the sport?

Boxing must be more popular than any era besides maybe the 70s globally, except the 70s before the 90s boxing was basically only watched in the USA, Japan, Britain, some American countries. Now it's watched basically everywhere in the world outside of Africa. at least enough to put it in top 15 sports basically everywhere on the planet and top 10 in most.
