Will DAZN ever be profitable?

After all the 'game changed' promises from Eddie, so far DAZN has been extremely underwhelming and as a result they have suffered huge losses.

I get that many start out companies make initial losses in the first few years when building a client base but I just don't see how DAZN is going to claw all its losses back. They just seem to be paying over the top for fights and most other promoters don't want to work with them.

From a UK perspective the DAZN cards are no better than the ones we had with Eddie on Sky. Eddie was making out like the shackles were now off and we would get top top quality fights on a much more regular basis but this hasn't happened.

If anything the average cards seem worse on DAZN cos we don't have the mainstream promotion of Sky's hype to build up fights between boxers.

At what point is Len gonna say enough is enough and he is not going to throw any more money away on DAZN?

    In this territory? Or overall?

I think it will become profitable over time at which point Boxing will be jettisoned/sidelined in favour of other more profitable sports

I can only talk from a UK point of view. There have had some good fights. The shift towards overseas bouts are probably good for many people, but because of the different time zones I don't follow them as much, much prefer the domestic scene.

The biggest suprise for me is the lack of advertising and promotion of DAZN, especially for a new channel. I remember when BT Sports and even Sentanta Sports were just starting up, you couldn't watch TV, pick up a newspaper without seeing an advert for them. I was expecting a much bigger push for subscriptions.

If it was purely a UK based channel, they wouldn't be able to survive with their lack of sports, but being subsidised by their earnings from other countries, maybe they will be okay.

The lack of advertising and awareness has really surprised me too.

I have a lot of casual boxing friends who love big fights but none of them have ever watched DAZN. It seems to be only die hards that have subscribed- and it doesn't seem like a lot of them have stuck with it.

I can't comment on other countries but it's definitely not taking the UK by storm

DAZN in the UK is probably an electricity bill on a P&L sheet, and nobody gives a hoot about them...

It's because most of the places to hook in the casual are rival companies who won't sell add space to them. Maybe they should look I to sponsorships over here?

You realise they hold much better rights in other large territories like Italy, spain, Japan and Germany.

they are at an unbelievably early stage. Netflix has only begun turning a profit in recent years. All they have to do is get a foothold in another 4/5 territories and they will be fine. But they will be funded for a minimum or 5/10 years before anything is done one way or the other

A few years ago, one could almost rename Sky Sports News to Eddie Sports News. Eddie Hearn was on the channel morning, noon and evening throughout the week leading up to a Matchroom Event. He is no longer and the effect is beginning to be felt on several fronts. Soon, some of Matchroom's UK boxers will sign with Boxxer / Sky Sports.

Would it surprise you to know that one of the worlds most valuable companies has never spent a dollar on advertising, Mr Hearn does all the advertising for free in the UK. Eventually traditional TV and programming will cease to exist and all media will switch to streaming this includes the eventual death of traditional news corps and television networks. This shift has began and is not going to reverse and smart company's like Disney and HBO are getting their slice.

I don't know about Hearn getting free advertising in UK.
Since Hearn's split from Sky the only airplay he gets tends to be on twitter and YouTube boxing channels.
To start making money he needs to target the casuals not just avid boxing fans.

Have you got a source for that. Genuinely think DAZN just don't wanna pay for highly rated advertising. Pretty sure the last time they did we saw canelo vs BJS ads on sky sports

Sky will accept DAZN money for Ads during Premier League no problem if DAZN willing to pay

Reckon Hearn can go a day without talking about Sky?

Admits in the video the attendance will be about 5k (so probably 4).

No source just common sense, I would be shocked if you saw an advert for DAZN on prime Sky Sports. Sky aren't idiots and willing to advertise a rival to their sub base.

Think the type of profits these businesses end up turning over it doesnt really matter at this stage if its profitable or not atm.

As long as they,ve got deep pockets which they have....they,ll just play the long game and wipe out any losses with incredible profits eventually.

Think overall hearn movings been a bad move for the UK boxing fans. Like him or hate him....he did play a massive part in making boxing popular again here in the UK. One thing he done pretty well was target the right market. Ie...the casuals. Like it or not to get a strong boxing scene....you kind of need the casuals onboard.

Its out of sight out of mind atm....you just feel the likes of warren or the new sky promoter etc dont actually have a clue on how to target the casual market. Warren kind of got lucky with fury....who,s great atm for the casual market. But when he goes....can see the boxing scene go downhill post hearn.

We,re about 6 months away from the crowd that despised hearn are on telling us they kind of miss him. Can see why he annoyed the hardcore fan but tbf....since his depature and a few boxing retirements etc....its a much quieter scene without him...even if that scene included guys like chisora and whyte etc.

You realise Eddie isn't DAZN? And despite his bluster about boxing, they do an awful lot more than that, especially outside of the UK and US?

Gave up reading the rest of your post after starting with the Eddie nonsense, I'm sure DAZN is fairly comfortable with its position or execs would have been exited by now.
