Been watching boxing since 1986 and have attended numerous hours in person, including big venture MGM fights. But yeah I guess I'm "new to the sport"

It's his "mythical" defence that is what I have a problem with. You can see it's nonsense and people that watch him will still deny it. It's weird.

He seemed to win rounds on personality and clowning at times. That was annoying. The counter balance to this was he was tough as nails. Too tough for his own good.

In ways, he reminds me of Roy Jones... unconventional style predicated on unworldly talent. And as the talent ebbed, bad things began to happen.

I saw Hopkins vs. Taylor at the MGM Grand. A bonus was watching Vernon Forest fight on the undercard. He was one of my favorites.

Roy looked unconventional, he hid his bones well. Jones was talented, but what he did was the product of dedication and diligent study. What Ali did was break the rules and lean on his chin to save him, he was a one dimensional fighter albeit talented fighter who just happened to have a Neanderthals skull.

Ali's hand and footspeed was superior to Pacquiao's in relation to his division. Most other heavyweights are not close to his quickness.

They pretty good fighters but suffer in comparison to the iron that came along during his 2nd career.

How does Ali look here? He's in shape against a superior heavyweight than Foster. Quarry was known for having good quickness as a smaller heavyweight.

Ali wasn't a sound technician if that's what your point is. He wasn't a technical savant as May Jr was.
But he was a gifted athlete that happened to be a boxer . Like Jones Jr, he was able to develop a certain style that would get most fighters K'oed. Leaning back, bad had positioning, chin above the jab shoulder, all those bad habits got more fighters koed than wins.
But Ali was different, like Jones Jr, Prime Ray Robinson, Leonard etc , those fighters were able to get away with technical issues most fighters couldn't dream of.
They were gifted. But one cannot deny in their primes they were very hard to hit cleanly. It's on film.
To take a version of Ali, clearly overweight, Slightly past his prime, and with utter disdain for his opponent (Foster) ability to hurt him. And use that 2nd rd as some indictment of him not being good defensively, sounds more agenda based than fair .
And to use that situation in that particular round when Foster was able to land on Ali. As some indication of what Louis would do to him if that were him . Is short sighted.
Mainly because Ali wouldn't go into a boxing ring knowing the Brown Bomber was in the opposite corner playing around.
In my opinion we'd see Liston , Williams , Foreman , 2nd Frazier fight version of Ali.
    A deadly serious version.

Ugh. He got hit a lot. It’s really not debatable. It’s on film. He didn’t make those things work because he was “so talented” most of the time he made it work because he had a cement head to save him.

What this round was meant to illustrate was he was being hit at will by a stiff, predictable fighter like Foster.

If he had the ability and the defence we like to pretend he has that wouldn’t have happened full stop, no matter what shape he was in! it is Mac Foster... You can find similar instances all across his career he wasn’t a consistently elusive fighter in the slightest. There is a reason his chin has a rep.

I can't really recall many people praising Ali for his defense. His speed, reflexes & toughness seem to be the most often focused on I guess?
