It wasn't his manager that threw the belt in the trash, it is the greatest duck in heavyweight history
Bowe was significantly better in 1992 to 1993 than Lewis was at that time, probably would have knocked him out. But Steward led Lewis was overall probably better than Bowe ever was.
Excellent prognosis, and one that chimes with my thoughts on the fight, Lewis could fight smart, as against Tua, Bowe was a tad predictable for my liking, not saying it would be easy for Lewis , but I feel one way or the other, he would find a way to win. stay safe George.
His manager was the one who advised him to do it. Newman was greedy and wanted a few easy fights for good money. The fight with Lewis was not gonna be easy. Anyway, Bowe was not scared one bit. At that point in time, he was the better of the two.
This I respectfully have issues with. McCall wasn't the type of fighter to dispatch easily. He was actually pretty good, certainly world class imo.
Bowe lost to Lewis in the ams. By 95, Lewis had beaten Ruddock, Butler, Tucker, Bruno, and Morrison, and lost to McCall. Bowe was conspicuously not fighting Lewis or any of those guys (full sized heavyweights who could crack). Nor did he fight Mercer or Witherspoon. Maybe his camp knew something about his durability that was was kept from the public. It's hard to say that Lewis had a worse chin when he was fighting bombers and Bowe was getting rocked by a past it Biggs.
I think the expert take on that (not that I'm an expert...hell no) is that Newman talked ******edly gullible Bowe into the belt thing. There's evidence that Lewis turned down 11 million dollars to fight Bowe not long after that...makes ya wonder whom was truly scared.
And he followed it up by not fighting any decent big heavyweight who could punch until the Golota disasters.
Aside from Lennox, which ones should he have fought, and at what point(s)? Just curious. The list that you'd mentioned with Lennox?
Idk, I’ll give him a pass for Ruddock since his career effectively ended with Lewis. Mercer and Witherspoon weren’t especially hard to make deals with and Bruno and Morrison would’ve done big numbers, although Bruno was with King.
