It can be said he (and Jones) simply stuck around too long which is what I think you are trying to say.
I don't think he was overrated above 147. Who rates him highly at 154 or above? Simply put, he was hit or miss after welter.
I've seen people on here rate Hearns as a top 3 at 154 and top 5 at middleweight. He's a very popular fighter, for good reason, but the fandom gets extreme imo.
Philly, I was talking about Duran, not Tommy. I have Tommy ranked 1 or 2 at 154, not that that really matters lol.
I think he had a lot of fans. But in all honesty he was rarely described as a “ nice person.” At least not based on the things that I’ve heard or read. Of course I’m sure someone will respond to me and post an account of him going to a children’s hospital to comfort some random kid who was dying of cancer or something. But be that as it may, Roberto Duran was indeed a very hard man….
Oh I must have gotten turned around in this thread. I thought you asked why i called myself a Hearns hater and I said I didn't hate him but think he gets overrated at 154+. Duran does too at 147+.
Cheers. Like I said before though, I honestly believe Duran is not rated particularly highly above 147. Just the way I see it.
Hearns as a top 5 at middleweight is obviously absurd but top 3 at 154 is entirely fair. He has a legit argument as the no. 1 at that weight.
Yeah, anything Duran did above welter only adds to his overall status p4p rather than a rating at 154 or 160.
Its very telling just how awesome Duran was in his prime if a poster is claiming he "sucked" during a period in his career that he won 2 world titles and barley missed a 3rd title vs an all time great (Hagler.) That's called setting the bar high. He was also able to make history during that sucky part of his career by becoming the only Lightweight Champion to win the Middleweight Championship. Good thing he doesn't have any haters.
He could have retired in 1979 and still held among the elite. Anything after that was icing on the cake.
