So I've only seen his fights against Holmes and Tyson, which were annihilations, but I'm looking at this record and those were his only losses and he has wins against Bugner (who lost to both father and son. any other examples of that in boxing?), Bonecrusher Smith, Quick Tillis and a few other decent heavyweights. For those who were following boxing at that time, what is your take on Marvis? How does he rate as a fighter to you?
Marvis was a solid fighter and by no means bad. As you noted, he beat a decent number of good fighters. In 2022 he would be best at cruiserweight but back then the CW limit was 190 and he was a 200 pound man. He was no match for the best heavies but could have been a champ for awhile at cruiserweight depending on whom he was matched with.
Wasn’t a bad fighter at all. Got blitzed vs Tyson who I think wanted to make a statement. And was rushed vs Holmes. His resume is decent if limited
Marvis had plenty of talent and beat excellent heavyweights as both an amateur and pro, but was injury prone and often inactive due to injuries, which resulted in him not fully developing as a fighter.
Good fighter who was ruined by turning him into a pressure fighter and putting him at heavy when he should have been a cruiser.
Marvin Frazier was the best amateur fighter in the world at one point. He was certainly a good fighter though undersized at heavyweight. Joe changing his style didn't help matters. He may have done better with Holmes had he boxed rather than fight like dad.
Actually he was a very good fighter, just too small at heavyweight. He did well against Bonecrusher.. He was not his father, but who is.
George Benton had been his trainer in the amateurs. He fought with more finesse. Joe took over as his career was over and Marvis was ready to turn pro. Marvis wasn't as strong as Joe, he didn't have the power or confidence to come forward in thar division. He had heart though.
