Michael Nunn vs Sumbu Kalambay

No score card needed. Gotta be one of the best one-punck KOs i've ever seen. McCallum dug waaaay back on that left.

 

Look at the foot placement and you’ll see Sumbu crapped the bed on how to fight a southpaw.

Sumbu came out circling and sliding to his left (correctly) to try to keep his lead (left) foot outside of Nunn’ s lead (right) foot.

But when he steps in for the fatal punch, he steps straight into the wheelhouse with his left foot far inside Nunn’s right, basically a sitting duck for a left-hand power punch.

Watching it, I don’t think it’s a fluke. I think it’s a flaw. Sumbu did it one time very early in the round and I think Nunn was sitting on it happening again, ready to pounce when it did. If he couldn’t maintain discipline on this for even two minutes, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

It just happened sooner.

I don't know how i missed this fight back then, as i used to watch Cleverly quite a bit. But what a fun fight this was. Non stop punching from the opening bell, the first 6 rounds were very close and there was quite a few swing rounds in my opinion. Cleverly was doing well being the aggressor landing some good uppercuts and combinations, and Fonfara when he had distance would land some nice crisp punches.

For me the fight started to turn in the 7th round, when Fonfara bloodied Cleverly's nose with an uppercut, and as it turned out Cleverly's nose was actually broken aswell. From that point on i felt Fonfara controlled the fight with his harder punches, although Cleverly kept it competitive with his aggression and occasional combinations, i feel like you could quite clearly see Fonfara was winning with his harder punches, as he was busting Cleverly up. Cleverly's early aggression which was effective in the first 6 rounds, was longer effective aggression as it was early on.

Overall a very fun competitive fight to watch, a combined 2800 punches thrown for Light Heavyweights is unreal. The difference between them was the power of the punches, Cleverly would land alot of clean punches, especially when he got his combinations going. But for me they wern't as effective as Fonfara's punches and that was the difference, especially later on in the fight when it became very apparent.

This was an amazing fight with a nice contrast of styles, the first 5 rounds Herrera was boxing on the backfoot, and Clay was the constant aggressor and seemed to out land Herrera in most of the early rounds. Although Herrera was very competitive in the first 5 rounds boxing nicely and landing his own punches, Clay just seemed to have the edge with his effective aggression and workrate.

The fight turned around after Herrera got knocked down in the 6th, and what was a good fight up until that point. Turned into an amazing fight after that, as Herrera decided he was going to fight fire with fire and stand in the trenches with Clay and slug, Herrera was also able to back up Clay on the ropes, which was the polar opposite of the early rounds. When Clay was pursuing Herrera.

Herrera had a very good 9th round as he hurt Clay in the latter part of this round, and to me he seem to be coming on strong. But amazingly Clay come out for the 10th like a punching machine, he hurt Herrera midway through the round. And never stopped punching until the referee finally decided to step in.

Lastly a few things i want to say about this fight, Mike Tyson was promoting this event. And he joined the commentary in the 8th round, and it was funny to hear Tyson get excited during the fight, and he even expressed disappointment when the referee stopped the fight. My initial reaction was i agreed with Tyson that the referee stopped it a tad early, but Herrera wasn't complaining so maybe the stoppage was the correct one.

Overall this is a must watch fight, every round was pure excitement. Although for me the last 4 rounds or so went to another level on what was already a good fight turned into an amazing one.

 

Orlando Salido v Terdsak Kokietgym

Another entry in the Salido FOTY competition. In truth, he was on top from round 4 onwards but got careless at the start of the 5th. After that, he ground down the Thai fighter and it was only a matter of time before he finished him.

I had an almost identical score to the three judges (who scored 96-91 for Salido) but I didn’t make round 5 a 10-8 for Terdsak as I felt Salido otherwise did enough to take the round had it not been for the flash KD.

1 9-10 (Salido down and wobbled too. Terdsak gets a KD counted against him too but the punch was low)
2 8-10 (Salido probably ahead in the round but then dropped hard at the end of the round)
3 10-9 (More cracking action. Salido is definitely feeling Terdsak’s power but landing well in combination to take the round)
4 10-7 (He’s back! How can you not love Salido?! After taking a pasting in the opening rounds he drops Terdsak twice)
5 9-10 (Salido starts the round intending to leverage his advantage but gets caught by a counter left for a flash knockdown. A slowish round after that before Salido finishes with a flourish. I don’t think the KD was enough to make this a clear 10-8 round for Terdsak.)
6 10-9 (attritional warfare, but Salido definitely getting the better of it)

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad who was known as Eddie Gregory during this time, i thought was pretty flat during this fight. I have to say i'm not really big fan of Muhammad, i often thought he was too lazy in the ring and was far too inconsistent. When he was on song he was great like vs Marvin Johnson, but how often did Muhammad produce that kind of performance ? for me he rarely put 100 percent into a fight, even though he clearly had silky smooth skills but he often wasted it being lazy.

As for the actual fight Scott just outhustled and manhandled Muhammad for most of the fight, Muhammad had one decent round in the 6th. Where he was able to back up Scott and hit him with occasional body shots, but overall he was content with throwing one punch at a time, and allowing Scott to take the play away from him and bully him.

Not the best of fights i have to say, there was a bit too much clinching mauling for my liking. Although it was a dominant performance from Scott, i have to say Scott's interview after the fight was quite funny. He wanted his friend or trainer to fight a 10 round exhibition with Muhammad Ali ? quite bizarre.

97-91 Martin the way the scoring was in this fight 7-3 Martin

I thought Scott was well beaten in this fight, Martin was the harder puncher. And was able to do to what Scott had done to previous fighters, and that was rough him up and pin him against the ropes. The right hand that knocked down Scott in the 1st round, was quite a shot and Scott was badly hurt and wobbling and just about survived the round, to me Scott still hadn't recovered from that shot and went down again from another right hand in the 2nd round. Scott didn't really get into this fight until the 3rd round, it took him awhile to recover from that devastating right hand in the 1st round.

To Scott's credit he was able to make this somewhat competitive after a bad start, he would have his own moments pinning Martin against the ropes. But for me Martin was the harder puncher and was able to beat Scott at his own game, this was a case of an aggressive swarmer like Scott. Coming up against another aggressive fighter who was as strong as him and hit harder than him, so it always going to be tough for Scott to win since he only fights one way.

I have to say lastly i did enjoy this fight alot more, than Scott's previous fight i watched vs Muhammad. And no it's not because Scott lost, whis was a very entertaining back and forth fight grueling rough fight with alot of good exchanges. And Scott unlike Muhammad was willing to not just accept that he'd lose and coast to losing a decision, Scott actually tried his hardest to get back into the fight and make up for the bad start, unfortunately as i said earlier he came up against a fighter who was as strong as him and hit harder.

Overall though a brave effort from Scott to survive a torrid start, and a impressive performance from Martin.

James Scott v Jerry 'The Bull' Martin

I saw this fight back when it happened and I think I had it closer back then. However, what it was was a good and very hard 10 rounder fought in 100 degree F temperatures in Rahway state Prison. Here we go, NJ rules on a rounds basis (with no extra points for a knockdown)

Actual scores were 7-3 and 6-4 (twice) for Martin. I don't know if they were bending over backwards for Scott within the prison walls, but I feel Martin outhustled, outpunched and outmuscled Scott at every turn. But a good, hard fight.

 

Watched it live (on TV … I was not incarcerated haha). I was much younger of course. But I remember it closer, along the 6-4/7-3 that the judges had it. I remember Scott being very competitive after he recovered from the knockdowns, but he definitely lost.

Hard to know how much it took out of him with the rulings that he wasn’t going to be allowed a furlough to Atlantic City to fight for a title (which the warden had fought for) and that the organizations weren’t going to force a champion to come to Rahway and fight him in the prison.

So at that point all his dreams were shot.

Fair play to Jerry the Bull, who did his job and did it well against a tough guy in a tough environment, but I’ll always wonder how much wind was taken out of Scott’s sails.

 

Ruiz vs Arreola

Watched this because PBC's YT channel put it up

Had Arreola win round 2 10-8 and round 3 10-9 the rest to Ruiz 117-110 which mirrored one judge while the others had it 118-109

Interesting fight, pretty exciting for about 3 or 4 rounds

Both men had long lay offs, new trainers and came in significantly lighter I think Arreola was his career lightest and Ruiz about 12 pounds lighter than Joshua I

Ruiz hit the deck early and got rocked later in the round and was hurt in the 3rd. He slowly took over the fight but still ate constant jabs all night. I think Arreola really showed up and got some redemption in defeat. Not a great fight, should never have been a PPV main event but a fun scrap

 

Andre Berto v Luis Collazo (welterweight title)

I checked this fight out today and then checked our history. Only @KO KIDD and @BoxxyMcBoxface wrote up on this. I would really advise anyone to check this out.

I didn't have an issue with the decision (well, 2 of the scorecards anyway). This was a damn close fight. But we, the spectator, were treated to one very nice clash. I just felt Collazo really exerted his strength over time to nick it. Very close, and again, they put on a show.

 

Your point is well taken but i think it was down to styles, Martin and Qawi were tough strong fighters. And Scott couldn't really bully them like he did to Muhammad. Scott only fights one way and his one way is very effective don't get me wrong, but when you come up against fighters just as strong as you who hit harder Martin, Qawi, it's going to be an uphill battle.

But don't get me wrong i did like James Scott, and his story is quite a remarkable one. And i do think he would of beat champion Mike Rossman at that time, i also think he would of beat Eddie Mustafa Muhammad again aswell as John Conteh. I think Scott loses to Matthew Saad Muhammad, Marvin Johnson, Michael Spinks, though.

 

@scartissue i remember watching this fight a long time ago. And for me i felt like Berto edged it as Collazo gave away too many of middle rounds from my recollection, kind of like how he did vs Ricky Hatton in another close fight.

It's funny you scored the 1st round even, i have a vivid memory of that round where both fighters got rocked, it was a close round as i remember it. But i did feel like Collazo edged the 1st round, because i thought he had the slightly better moments.

 

I think i had berto win in my post and i used to hate berto especially after all his holding vs urango

I remember one round lederman and hbo harped for collazo where berto totally out landed him. Been years since i watched it but for years felt collazo was robbed until a rewatch

I still to this day think berto really blew it by pulling out vs mosley. Yes the disaster in haiti was awful but mosley was pretty winnable

 

Don’t disagree with your points. While I certainly would have liked to have seen Scott somehow get a title shot — even if it was NBC throwing out enough purse money for a voluntary defense — I understand why it didn’t happen.

My memory (haven’t seen it since it was live on TV) is that Scott decided to try to box Qawi rather than manhandle him. Maybe the Martin fight impacted his confidence. Maybe he wanted to show off that he had skills beyond aggressive body punching machine.

But I think Qawi learned to box in Rahway (or at least had been there) and that would mean that (a) fighting there wouldn’t have intimidated him (and he wasn’t intimidated by anything anyway); and (b) if their time overlapped they may have sparred before and Scott knew he wasn’t going to be able to go toe to toe with the Camden Buzzsaw. (Or even if they weren’t there at the same time, if Qawi had been there before Scott would have had some first-hand accounts from which to formulate an opinion on how to approach the fight.)
