Was watching some clips of Freddie Steele in The Story of GI Joe (beside Robert Mitchum) and Desperate (beside Raymond Burr) and thought about this.... Obviously, Jim Corbett comes to mind, he who wanted to quit the squared circle for the footlights. Sullivan and Fitzsimmons starred in some presumably awful stage productions. On a much lesser level as a boxer, Victor McLaughlin became a fine actor. Lots of actors like Robert Mitchum had boxed in their youth. And lots of boxers like Tami Mauriello and Abe Simon had bit parts later in life. Ken Norton opposite Susan George is pretty unforgettable ("Take me Mandingo Buck!"). I guess my question is who were the greatest exponents of both crafts combined? Anyone care to draft a list?
Tony Danza Mickey Rourke Carlos Monzon got top billing in a few movies in Argentina with decent reviews.
I'm looking for accomplished boxers.. Good call on Monzon. We can add Hagler, who starred in some Italian films.
Some good clips of Freddie acting here... https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/person/183505|55701/Fred-Steele#overview
I guess it’s relative, not absolute, but Max Baer wasn’t awful, perhaps even good, in The Prizefighter and the Lady, particularly if you take the acting era into account. Great movie at any rate even if only for the contemporary and real life historical boxing figures that also appear. Saw it a long time ago but recall Archie Moore turning in a decent performance in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Yes, Norton was in Mandingo and Drum. Other assorted appearances but he hit the big time when he appeared in Knight Rider alongside Germany’s GOAT in any endeavour, THE HOFF. Jerry Quarry at the least, appeared in The Six Million Dollar Man. Sugar Ray Robinson was in an ep. of Mission Impossible also.
Tommy Hearns appears in one episode of "who is the boss?" as Tony Danza's boxing nemesis; does it count? This content is protected
Archie Moore had a big part in The adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He got a lot of flack I believe for taking the controversial part at the time. You’re favorite Rocky Marciano played a pirate I think in a bad Cuban movie before they went commie and Rex Layne was in a few movies Primo had a role in Hercules or Sparta or something I forget
For the ultimate juxtaposition we cannot leave out Bruce Seldon - though I don’t feel that he was fully immersed in his role. I wanted to believe in his character but I just couldn’t. So it’s a 1 star out of 5 from me.
