Tommy Hearns goes back in time, finds himself in the ring with 1951 Sugar Ray Robinson, 15 rounds. This match would be at 160 lbs. Can Hearns keep up Robinson with his forum award winning left jab?

Richard., I see this ending very badly for Tommy.
Hearns perhaps winning the first few round s, maybe marking up his face.
Then just as Hearns is getting comfortable.. BANG!
Sugar Ray nails him with whip Crack right hand.
Tommy's legs do the fandango, and down he goes.!
Hearns chin was never going the distance with SRR.

I see Tommy having a realistic chance mostly for the reason that he is very dangerous with the right hand

After staying out of Tommy's way for a few rounds, Ray could catch Tommy with his left hook and lay him out (ala Iran Barkley)

Then again, Tommy could just as easily catch Robbie with his right hand and blitz him

    Definitely a pick 'em fight

I see your post as very realistic. Sure Tommy was dangerous with a right hand early in the match but let's be honest, Hearns cannot take a punch from top of the line fighters like Leonard, Hagler or even Barkley. I see his stamina and chin as his two glaring weaknesses. Sure he can crush smaller opposition like Cuevas and Duran but put him in with peak strong fighters with a strong a chin and stamina, then that's all she wrote, he continues to get knocked out. I have good eye site. Sugar Ray Robinson was on the canvas a few times but he got up to win, he had heart. When Tommy has hit the canvas, there is no getting up from Hearns. I see Robinson stopping Hearns much the same way that the other Sugar did on Sept 16 1981, TKO 14.

I'd say this issue was mainly a huge weakness at 160+. As long as Hearns uses his reach and boxes he's fine. Brawling w SRR would be too risky. Still a 50/50 fight.

While I respect your honest opinion, Tommy Hearns cannot hang with a much quicker fighter that has a better chin than he has. As I posted, this fight would look like his Sept 16 1981 match against Sugar Ray Leonard. It appears that Hearns has never recovered once he has been floored by a good fighter, his chin has failed him and his stamina, balance has always failed him too. What happens when a fighter lands with his powerful right hand early and the other guy does not fall? Sugar Ray Robinson had a great chin, balance, speed, and heart. Robinson had the experience and a great ring IQ.

At middleweight, Tommy didnt have the handicap of entering too light which affected his late round stamina in the Leonard fight

although Leonard is no Robinson, he was good enough to finally catch up to him late

Still, with the badly needed muscle to fill out his 6 - 1 frame, I see no late round stamina issues and if Tommy could enter the match as he did in the Shuler fight, I see Tommy emerging victorious

Hearns has a 50/50 chance against Robinson?

    No way.

If Hearns finds himself up against the Robinson who dethroned LaMotta, I think he's got no chance.

Hearns was very good but Robinson was the GOAT and in a league of his own.

Robinson by stoppage in round 8 or 9 while comfortably ahead on points.

Speed and stamina outdoes power that short circuits any day.

Do you old-timers even realize this guy lost like twenty times? They weren't all to people who were that great...or even great at all...hate to break it to you.

Tommy was defeated by the lesser Sugar Ray, thus I doubt he can do better against the greater one...

Hearns would never be "fine" against Robinson, he'd be in constant danger while trying box with him. I agree with the Leonard fight comparison, except SRR takes Tommy out earlier. I don't see Robinson's ferocity in the ring being given it's due in our day & age - he was an absolute killer, an animal.

I know that Robinson was the ultimate champion but,,,

keep in mind that throughout the 1950s, Robinson lost several title matches

Even at his best weight 147, several title matches went the distance and besides that, Hearns was also an absolute killer/animal
