Ezzard Charles is Overrated.

For those attacking this post,I think anyone is entitled to raise questions about the resume and standing of any fighter.They should however be prepared to justify their opinions.
Playing Devils Advocate a bit here.
Charles beat Burley twice yes he did.Burley was giving him 6 and a half pounds in one fight and nine pounds in the other. Ezz also had 5 lbs on Lloyd Marshall for one of their fights.
Eleven pounds on Maxim for one of their bouts.
Charles beat Moore 3 times and that cements his place imo, but others beat Archie too. Charles is routinely placed in the P4P ranks, he's in mine,but there are others who seldom if ever make the cut others that have very impressive wins too.

Yes, if you take losses into account, which you should. Charles went 8 years with only a disputed loss to a HW contender that was 20 lbs heavier than him and avenged that loss with a KO in the rematch. Marshall and Williams didn't have runs like that.

 

I don't know about Williams ,but Marshall did business a few times

 

Those wins don’t compare to Charles resume. Fine he out weighed a few guys by a little he was also drastically out weighed by the likes of Louis, Walcott, Baksi, Elmer Ray, Holman etc. let’s go over Charles best wins…

I'm not saying Charles isnt a P4P great just that others of his era had great resumes, and never get considered as greats let alone P4P.

 

Great fighters but Charles resume is deeper and fully extends from middle to the worlds heavyweight championship …

 

That’s one win of many that happens to be special regardless of opinion. Point is he’s deep. Beyond deep. All time deep. To argue he wasn’t special or overrated just isn’t a valid argument at all.

The premise of this thread just gets dumber and dumber the longer it stays on the front page.

Charles' CV reads like a who's who of his era across three divisions. It's ridiculous.

yeah the man had 15,000 fights. Moore went on to rule the light heavyweight division for 10 years in his 30th and 40s a decade after Charles blitzed him 3x in his prime lol

burley is a hall of fame middleweight at his peak with two wins over Holman Williams sandwhiched between Charles fights. Charles was only 20 years old! And shutout burley twice! Burley usually weighed in mid 150s his entire career

marshall also had 2 1/2lbs on Charles when he got flattened by him in 1946.

charles beat Maxim twice in 1942 giving up 16 and 18lb in both fights! Are you serious?

charles beat jersey Joe walcott 2x, a hall of fame heavyweight

Charles gave hall of fame Joe Louis his first loss in 14 years

Charles beat hall of Famer Jimmy Bivins 4 times


charles destroyed world champion Anton christoforidas in 3 rounds while only a teenager

He beat hall of Famer teddy Yarosz at age 19

he defeated a slew of highly ranked contenders. I could make at least 20

at age 32, he gave a prime Marciano one of his toughest fights

he had 8 title defenses as heavyweight champ

 

Marshall had no run even close to that. When Charles came back from the war he beat Marshall x 2, Bivins, Lesnevich, Maxim, Ray, Moore x 3, Louis and Walcott x 2 among many others. During this time he only lost to Ray, a close disputed decision, and avenged that with a KO.

Charles blitzed Moore once, the other two fights were majority decisions for Charles.
Louis had not fought for 2 years.
Christoforidis was 164lbs and not the champion when Charles beat him Lesnevich had taken his version of the title.
Burley was not a middleweight when Charles beat him. HOF means what?
