What was Joe thinking trying to exchange bombs with a killer that has all KO's..... what a huge tactical mistake!! I bet his coach is so angry with him.

Smith is a limited fighter and can't really do much else.

Smith is a puncher who was fighting a much more skilled boxer/puncher. I think he took his best chance by going for it. If he would have tried to box he would have just gotten systematically beaten down.

So do you think that was the gameplan of his team all along? Just start throwing bombs in the third round ??

That was his only chance, to catch him and catch him early. He can’t box with Beterbiev, Beterbiev is far more skilled.

That’s it, go for glory or go out on your back. Beterbiev would have beaten him up and stopped him if he tried to box, that’s delaying the inevitable while giving up your one and only chance of landing a big punch early.

Smith’s best chance was to brawl. And hopefully land a bomb in an exchange. He actually tried it, in the second round and after a brief exchange where Smith took the worse of it, he called Beterbiev in for more. He knew it was his only chance, but Beterbiev was too smart and stepped back. He found every hole in Smith’s defense in less than a round. Timed overhand rights that Smith had no answer for

I dont blame him, he would've had no success trying to box. At best he could've tried to run Beterbiev into a counter but it probably wouldn't have worked either because Beterbiev boxed. Smith's limited but he has power, so it was his only shot

People also complain when the more limited fighter sits back and gets out boxed without "going for it." A different game plan wouldn't have mattered, Joe is just not on Artur's level.

Smith wasn't going to outbox Beterbiev or finely work the openings to land his shots. Might as well just go for the gusto and see what you can do with that big punch. Not much, as it turned out, but trying to be cute wouldn't have changed the outcome. Maybe he lasts a couple rounds longer, but for what purpose?

    Hindsight is 20/20

Had Joe, whose only chance was to catch Beterbiev before Beterbiev caught him, went out there and started trying to be some kind of technical boxer, and got broken down and stopped... people would be calling him an idiot and that he shouldn't have tried to box Beterbiev, someone whose been applying effective pressure on world class boxers with better skills than Smith since the amateurs.

Also... it's entirely plausible that Joe was already badly stunned by the time he started exchanging bombs and did that because he didn't think he would survive if he went on the backfoot, so he went for broke hoping he'd catch Biev in an exchange.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

This will be similar when AJ finds that trying to ragdoll, maul and stop Usyk early isn't going to work, and will end up with AJ stopped by the mid-rounds after he gasses.

Sometimes there are no routes to victory, outside of a hail mary bomb that connects.

At least Smith came to win, and went for it. Would folks rather have seen him do a Callum Smith vs Canelo?
