George Foreman vs Jerry Quarry

Nobody in his prime, to my knowledge. I don't think he faced many Quarrylike fighters at all, which is what I was getting at.

Maybe Holyfield in his second career, although others disagree with me on how much he resembled Quarry.

 

I watched Quarry - Lyle about 6 months ago and from memory Lyle fought an inside fight giving up all of his physical advantages. I scored the fight big for Quarry but Quarry still had "mental" lapses that allowed Lyle to land big punches most rounds. Quarry would have a chance with Foreman IF he (Quarry) got past the third round and wasn't busted up. IMO, young Foreman got weaker each round and after 3 a guy like Quarry might be able to take advantage of his stamina problems. Foreman would probably beat up Quarry during the first three rounds and either stop him or have him ready to go by the 4th. If the fight was mostly even after 3, then I would lean toward Quarry.

Quarry could win in that situation but he'd probably still get hit by big punches as long as GF was standing. Even when he was winning big, Quarry got hit. Quarry probably wouldn't get knocked out by a single hard punch but he might take too many of them in a winning effort. If I was backing either of them I'd be nervous, I'd be worried that Quarry would get hurt in the first 3 rounds and I'd be worried if I was backing Foreman that he wouldn't get Quarry either out or hurt in the first 3. IMO, the first 3 rounds would be the key.

 

I don't care what George says. He was a humble guy or held himself out as a humble guy. He would literally push Quarry the way he pushed Joe whenever he got close. That would prevent him from scoring and would allow him to get busted up.

It's an interesting match up but Jerry got hit too often and lacked the exceptional speed / power to defeat George ... May be a lot like the Norton - Quarry fight but with prime guys going at it ..

 

Foreman by TKO inside 4 rounds. This might be a fight where the knockout victim lands almost everything he throws. Quarry had a strong punch but George was crazy and could walk through almost anything early in a fight.

 

Jerry Quarry had quick hands and was an excellent counterpuncher. More talented than Chuvalo.

It’s been talked about a fair bit. Quarry may have been someone George didn’t fancy, to back up his twitter quote Quarry supposedly used to bust Foreman up in sparring and allegedly dropped him big. Could they have ever met?

Quarry might’ve done the trick. We only know 70s Foreman does well enough against come forward types… One of similar size almost had him out…

We have no, I repeat zero instances of Foreman in the 70s beating a decent sized “boxer” but we do however have plenty of instances of Quarry beating guys as hard hitting as Foreman and as wide swinging, predictable and stiff looking.

 

I don’t think a George bad as much trouble as some think. I don’t think he could take George’s best without the fight being stopped.

 

Ken Norton was a pretty good sized heavyweight for that era.

 

I tend to agree Quarry was poison to sluggers, if hes smart and doesnt allow himself to get pulled into a brawl with George he has a good shot. The only fly in the ointment is Quarry tended to cut pretty easy but I think its a 50-50 fight.

 

A fragile one who wasn’t that good. In my opinion.

 

Quarry would have a shot but Foreman did that pushing thing all the time. I think if Quarry landed some, George would push him away. If he knew to use his jab like old Foreman, I’d make George a bigger favorite.
