Amazing feat by the Champ. He fought 8 times in a 1 year span in 8 different cities. The Champ fought in Houston then a month later was in Switzerland. Ali went all the way to Tokyo to fight Mac Foster. Then somehow fought a month later in Canada. He has a grueling fight in Vegas vs. top 3 contender Jerry Quarry then 3 weeks later has a fight in Ireland. Win Buster Mathis UD 17-Nov-71 Astrodome, Houston, Texas, U.S. Win Jürgen Blin KO 26-Dec-71 Hallenstadion, Zürich, Switzerland Win Mac Foster UD 1-Apr-72 Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan Win George Chuvalo UD 1-May-72 Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Win Jerry Quarry TKO 27-Jun-72 Las Vegas Convention Center, Winchester, Nevada, U.S. Win Alvin Lewis TKO 19-Jul-72 Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland Win Floyd Patterson RTD 20-Sep-72 Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, U.S. Win Bob Foster KO 21-Nov-72 Sahara Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada, U.S. Remember this feat next time you compare the "Superheavyweights" of today to fighters of the 1970s. Tyson Fury fights once a year. How would he look if he was fighting 8 times per year. His out of shapeness would get exposed if he had to fight that often.
Muhammad Ali as champion from Feb 25 1964 until he was stripped of his title on April 28 1967 fought in Canada against George Chuvalo on March 29 1966, then against Henry Cooper on May 21 1966 in London, England, then in England against Brian London on August 6 1966, and then against Karl Mildenberger on Sept 10 1966 in Frankfurt, Germany. A World champion should defend against challengers all over the globe, he is not a champion from one country but a World Champion. He should be demonstrating his skills world over to his many fans. Fans should not be hogged by the country that he is from. That is what's wrong today, it's always Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or Madison Square Garden, why not other venues like before?
He had 15 fight in three years after his lay-off, and that included a forced break because of a broken jaw. Really made up for lost time. I also think his people wanted to keep him busy since his disciple wasn't the best anymore. Just a guess.
Add these fights to your list of Ali's travels from first championship reign. In 1966, Ali defeated five guys during a period of less than eight months. Of these wins four were outside of his home country: 3/29 George Chuvalo, Toronto, Canada, 15-round decision 5/21 Henry Cooper, London (Kensington), England, six-round TKO 8/6 Brian London, London (Highbury), England, three-round KO 9/10 Karl Mildenberger, Frankfurt, Germany, 12-round KO 11/14 Cleveland Williams, Houston, Texas three-round TKO Whoops! I see Richard beat me to it by 12 minutes!
You don't get that type of activity now with the big guys. Ever. Even when Tyson became champ he was fighting every couple of month defending.
Muhammad Ali had 15 International fights in 11 different countries in 4 different continents. A true World Champion. As far as I know, no champion has ever fought in outdoors in the brutal elements of Africa except for Ali/Foreman.
