I'm a great admirer of the Butterbean. I think he is vastly underrated. Against Liston he's toast. Liston will KO him in one or two rounds. Bean is exactly the kind of fighter Liston wanted- coming at him with arms flailing. Lineal champions that Bean could have beaten: Floyd Patterson Ali (the Ali who fought Larry Holmes)
Floyd Patterson would kill Butterbean and the corpse of 1980 Ali still has a shot. The 1981 Ali who fought Berbick schools Butterbean by virtue of the fact he could still throw a jab and knew how to box. Butterbean was a sideshow act. Not knocking him because he did alright out of it but he sucked as a boxer.

Patterson would have a fear lockup against Butterbean just like he had with Liston. He'd be beat before he stepped into the ring. 1980 Ali might have had a shot, but I would bet on Bean.
I gotta go with Butterbean in this one. Liston would be too slow, he couldn't handle Butterbean's Charley Burley esque reflexes. Butterbean would counter him to death. Plus we know Butterbean could handle punchs from someone like Liston. Could Liston take punches from someone as powerful as Butterbean? I doubt it.
