Rewatching this fight ahead of the 3rd fight. This will only be my 2nd watch. 1st watch was live on a poor-quality illegal stream years ago. On the first watch I thought Canelo won but like I said the quality was very poor and I couldn't confidently tell which shots were landed clean or see GGG's parrying defense.

I also preface this by saying I am nobody, just a fan here who was a lot more active on the forum years ago. I've kept following boxing just not active here. If you're a GGG or Canelo fanboy I'm sorry if this doesn't end your way, I just thought I'd add to the mix of opinions on this 2nd fight. For the record I thought the draw in the 1st fight was acceptable but I had it 115-113 for GGG, and have watched that one a few times. In no way do I agree with Byrd btw.

Round 1 - War of jabs, nothing of note landed, GGG wins on the jab. Great timing from both, two masters of the craft.
    10-9 GGG

Round 2 - Starts out with more jabbing, Canelo lands. Canelo digs one to the body. GGG lands a good uppercut to the face. 2:00 mark now. Canelo feints hook to the body and lands a sneaky clean left hook to GGG's face, very nice shot. Canelo's left is good like that, it comes out looking like a hook to the body or uppercut and turns into a hook to the face. Canelo lands glancing uppercut, GGG glancing straight right. They trade more power shots, nothing super flush. After 1:00 mark, Canelo rips an uppercut to the body + overhand. GGG tapping Canelo with the right, not flush. GGG lands a sneaky flush left hook behind Canelo's guard, very nice. GGG wins the jab war but Canelo being more active. Power shots landed seem even to me. Nice action from both sides, I can see this round going either way. I'm giving it to Canelo for power combos, but to me it's debatable.
    19-19 even

Round 3 - Jabbing and each land flush jabs, they trade uppercuts. Sneaky counter left hook from Canelo around 1:36 mark. GGG responds with jabs and a right cross. Canelo is winging some big shots but nothing lands. After 1:00 now. GGG's winning jab is shining again. GGG lands a couple of straight rights, Canelo rips to the body. I give this one to GGG on the jab and straight rights, though Canelo had his moments.
    29-28 GGG

Round 4 - GGG opens the round with a hook to the body and a counter jab. Beautiful timing from GGG to close out the first minute, jabs and hooks. 2:00 mark now. Uppercut to the face and jabs to the head and body from GGG again, Canelo lands a jab. 1:30 mark now, Canelo digs to the body, GGG rips one right back. Ouch. Nothing else of note lands until 1:00 mark, GGG snaps Canelo's head back with a counter jab. They trade combos and nothing flush lands. :30 mark Canelo rips to the body again. GGG continues jabbing. This round goes to GGG clear. Canelo was throwing a lot but not landing as much really.
    39-37 GGG

Round 5 - Round opens up with GGG right to the body and Canelo hook to the head. Strong jabs from GGG. 2:25 mark, they trade combos, good bodywork from Canelo. Good right from Canelo, GGG responds with an uppercut. 2:00 mark now. Canelo sneaks in a body shot. GGG continues to jab. Some posturing for a while, nothing landing. They both swing lefts and miss. GGG taps Canelo with straight rights. 1:00 mark, war of jabs, Canelo lands a couple good ones but GGG lands more jabs. GGG wins this one on jabs, he's really established his jab and that short straight right this round.
    49-46 GGG

Round 6 - Canelo opens this round with a nice short left hook and slips a GGG overhand right. Canelo rips to GGG's body, you can tell those hurt. 2:30 mark, another Canelo left hook to the body. They're trading short shots, nothing super clean landing. 2:00 mark. Good 1-2 from GGG. 1:30 mark great counter left hook from Canelo. Short glancing right from GGG, followed by another left hook to the body from Canelo. They trade short rights. 1:00 mark now. Another left hook to the body from Canelo and by golly I think Canelo's jab is better this round. Pretty even last 30 secs, trading short shots. Canelo wins this one.
    58-56 GGG

Round 7 - They come out swinging, the first 30 seconds are them trading short hooks and jabs. Couple uppercuts sprinkled in there. Great defense from both, it's hard to land clean on either guy. Fighting in the pocket this round, they trade short hooks. 1:30 mark, I have this round dead even. Good 1-2 from Canelo. Good jabs and short rights from GGG, but a bit pitty-pat. Left to the body and head from Canelo. This one goes to Canelo. Landed more meaningful shots and pressed the action a bit more. Don't know what Lederman was watching.
    67-66 GGG

Round 8 - They come out swinging, hard to land but Canelo gets some body shots in eventually. Canelo ripping to the body now and lands a clean right to the face. 2:16 mark now. Sneaky counter right to the face from GGG. 2:00 mark. Nice short crispy right to the face from Canelo. Good left hook from GGG, good left to the body from Canelo. 1:30 mark. Good right from GGG. Good right from Canelo. 1:00 mark now. Good rights from GGG. GGG closes the round with good jabs. This one is so hard to score. I give it to GGG for overall better work in the round despite Canelo's good work in the first minute.
    77-75 GGG

Round 9 - First minute of the round, GGG gets in some jabs and rights, lands a chopping right, Canelo gets in a ripping right hand body shot. Second minute of the round, they're blocking a lot of each other's shots. Canelo gets in another body shot. They trade left hooks before 1:00 mark. Between 1:00 and :30 Canelo is piecing him up. :30 to :00 lot of stuff thrown, lot of stuff blocked and parried. Clear Canelo round.
    86-85 GGG

Round 10 - GGG gets in some sneaky uppercuts to the face in the first 30 seconds. They trade counter rights. 2:00 mark. Great shots from GGG, gets in a clean 1-2 and another jab. Canelo ducks and weaves away from GGG's follow up combo. 1:30 mark. Canelo gets in some short uppercuts and a left hook to the body. 1:00 mark. GGG short right. GGG flurries at the end, touching Canelo. Canelo sneaks in a couple shots too. This round goes to GGG. Through the power shots GGG's jab is still active and strong, a few of them making Canelo's head snap.
    96-94 GGG

Round 11 - GGG walks over and lands a few short shots. Clinch, GGG under Canelo's armpit. No backward behind-the-back shot from Canelo this time haha. Around the 1:50 mark GGG lands a great combo on Canelo. GGG is busting him up. 1:30 mark now. Canelo wings in some big shots but GGG slips them all. Sneaky counter right uppercut from Canelo around :37 mark. Nothing else from Canelo aside from a good 1-2 at the end. GGG round.
    106-103 GGG

Round 12 - The round starts off with a clean left hook from GGG followed up by flush jabs in quick succession. Sneaky clean right uppercut from GGG with another jab. 2:30 mark now. GGG slips and blocks big combos from Canelo. Canelo slips while throwing another combo, none lands. Canelo gets up and rips one to the body. 2:00 mark, they're really trading leather now, Canelo gets in some nice counters. GGG snaps his head back with a jab. 1:30 mark. GGG gets in a short uppercut to the face. 1:00 mark. Canelo rips to the body and gets in some short hooks. Good straight right from GGG lands. Hook uppercut combo from Canelo lands right before :30 mark. Both men digging deep now. Last 30 seconds, GGG lands a long right uppercut, jab, straight right, uppercut. This round goes to GGG. Canelo had his moments but this is a clear GGG round to me.
    Final score: 116-112 GGG.

Questions in my mind are: GGG's jab was a huge deciding factor in this fight, as well as his clever minimalistic defense. Can he perform at that level in the 3rd fight as he's aged? Canelo boxed beautifully and dug deep, will he go back to the body in the 3rd fight? Surely he's rewatched this 2nd fight and seen how those body shots hurt GGG.

BTW I have no bias going into this re-watch. I like both their fighting styles, was never a hater. Historically preferred GGG over Canelo but Canelo's recent video calling GGG an ******* actually made me more of a Canelo fan haha. It's good when Canelo shows some personality.

I initially had it 117-111 GGG, but after rewatching it, 118-110 GGG. The idea the rematch was a close legit win for Canelo is one of the biggest sleight of hand smoke and mirrors tricks narrative pushing fanboys have ever managed to pull on this sport. No fair and honest observer that has even a modicum of sense when it comes to scoring boxing, could have anything but a clear GGG win. Hell... even the Kellerman argument that Canelo won the "story of the fight" is invalid upon closer inspection.

    A*

I actually think this was more of a clear win than the first fight. GGG landed some heavy blows rounds 9-12

I always thought so too but lately I'm starting to think he really is just professional about it and keeps his mouth shut and is not just a snobby snob. GGG being fake nice I can see as a possibility, I've met many a faker in my life. Who really knows. All I know is that it's more fun when Canelo opens up more!

Good score, my range of scores was 9-3 to 7-5 so I went with 8-4.

I was a GGG fan living in China when this fight happened, and I wasn't able to see the fight live. Learning that he lost, I was unable to stomach watching the fight later. This RBR has given me the heart to maybe watch it soon, so thanks!

I mean I've been doing other things in the meantime. Reading, travelling, plotting against my nemesis, a wily badger who lives in the field opposite me and who's proven to be my wiliest adversary yet.

Come on man. We all know Canelo won that fight based on courage.

You don't need to win that many rounds. You just need courage... and it was courage that won him the fight, since he only won about 4 rounds in that fight.

Was GGG’s busted up face smoke and mirrors too?

You don't score rounds based on facial damage. You know that, so stop coming at me with this casual bull****. Usyk and Lomachenko regularly win fights in dominant fashion, and look like they've been through WW3. Some people scuff up worse than others.
