"Brilliant boxing AJ", despite the fact that he was getting slapped. It tells me his corner didn't care anymore and were happy to use tactics that were not working so long as they got their paycheck and fed their fighters ego. His team sending him out to box Usyk was a sign that a change needed to be made.
His team is the same, bar Rob McCracken. The guy shouting brilliant is still there and the one who was talking over McCracken in between rounds is now his main trainer.
A lack of situational awareness rather than self awareness is how I'd phrase it. I'm not a big AJ guy, but this is about a million times more mature than how DW dealt with Breland. He's totally justified in dropping McCracken for the reasons he identified.
People are wondering how AJ could not know he was losing. When you are in a fight, you are pumped up. Every time you get hit, you think, "that didn't hurt"...and every time you land something, you think "wow, I got him good!" People's minds have a very pro-self bias. Especially athletes with their enormous egos. This would be an even bigger issue when Usyk barely puts any power on his punches. So AJ is getting touched all night long, but it's not exactly snapping his head back, making his eyes water. He did need the corner to tell him he was losing.
All McCracken ever tells his fighters is use the jab and right hand, he even repeated this in the post fight prss conference when asked if he would get AJ to implement different tactics for a rematch, that basic stuff only works at amateur level, McCracken is basically an amateur coach.
You can see by his face in the final rounds that he knew he was getting beat, he was fighting desperately and was out on his feet at the end.
Angel Fernandez appears to be taking the main responsibilities with Garcia assisting and overseeing. Either way it doesn't change my point, Fernandez and Clayton are still there and they're the ones being referred to as yes men.
That last round you saw him realize he was getting hurt, but it was too late for his corner to talk to him at that point.
Yeah and Mikey Garcia genuinely thought he was beating Spence too And Sandor Martin Watch This content is protected Remember that the guy who was clearly getting his ass whooped aka AJ and obviously knew he was losing also lied through his teeth about never having entered a fight with a game plan before which is not only patently absurd but also very easily disprovable.
I was watching AJ vs Pulev today and he was saying that phrase, exacly when AJ was getting hit by Pulev, and same thing with Usyk. I wonder why. Was Rob trying to convince AJ that he was doing everything right, when obviously he was not ?
