You saw a particularly bad performance and he's managed to evade shots from bigger punchers in the past. He is slow but he's good with angles and sets up well. Someone else was always labelled too slow in his early career... Carl froch, he did OK though didn't he. There are similarities there in terms of stamina and a very good chin. Personally, I doubt he manages to win a belt but he'll be tough to beat anywhere below that level
It was a keep busy fight and he was headlining a card so needed a dance partner. I've said this so many times tonight but lots of the top 10 or so are tied to fights akready or have very recently fought. Ultimately its the lad's job and he needs to earn a living just as much as we do
Haha brilliant. He may surprise us with some hidden speed one day is my guess. That silly flip he does after a fight is the quickest I've seen him move. No joke a man that size spinning round that quickly is quite freakish. Surely he can do that with his hands. You heard it here first
I always find it intriguing when youtubers preemptively swear at and shoot down the people who watch their videos. Some people need to to be taught that boxing is about more than speed and power. Possibly the two attributes that can make for an exciting fighter but if you're gonna post videos and profess to be a boxing guru, it would really help if you learnt about the sport. Where has the guy from the dubois fight gone? He was left in the ring that night and the following camp was tailored to a different opponent. Sometimes they don't get it totally right and especially with a late replacement opponent. I hope Joyce gets a dangerous top ten fighter next. Judge him then
Sure, but there must be some hungrier opponents in the top 40 that would have welcomed an opportunity to climb the rankings even at short notice. Hammer was just a warm body that posed zero risk to Joyce (and Warren's business interests) But... it stops the card from collapsing, which would have consequences for the undercards fighters and all the support staff.
Do you have any memory of how poor the average world level heavyweight was in the 90s? Maybe you’re young and you’ve only watched the top tier fighters on YouTube. Every single era there are boxing fans crying about how their era is so weak compared to how it used to be. It will happen again in ten-twenty years time re: the current era. You don’t have comparable samples in your memory even if you were around in the 90s. Could Joe Joyce take a punch from Wilder? I doubt it, but I’d be more confident in him than Lewis taking it - the guy who got knocked out twice (including by a guy who everyone pointed to as evidence of it being a weak era when Lewis retired - following his bashing by Vitali). You’re singing a tired song, appreciate fighters while they are here. Joyce is more than the equal of guys like Briggs, Rahman, Grant etc.
I've not thought he's ever looked good...fubois fight being the exception and me still wondering why fubois couldn't see the jab coming..but then again..he also has no head movement. Froch was the suprise to me because I thought the same of him...but I don't think how Joyce is the heavyweight Carl froch....when I was younger I thought Antonio Margarito was an unstoppable monster who couldn't be hurt and would walk through anything...we know how that turned out in the end...Chins crack...n Joyce's style at heavyweight will see him get laid out.. probably on his face at some point...and yet again...I think he's lucky this era isn't loaded with punchers
I just took a peak at the fight. That was just a listless, unfocused performance because of the circumstances. He was sparring while thinking about whether he should get a new furnace installed. I don't love the attitude it shows, the respect for boxing and the audience, but it's a common failing and not a fatal one. I'm starting to think Dubois' team let him down there, they gave him one tactic and just kept pushing him to do it more even though it got countered every time.
Having watched the fight this morning, we saw Joyce does what he usually does against opponents he has no fear off, he just goes right at them and doesn't give defence much thought because he knows they can't hurt him and he can hurt them. When he's in with a more dangerous opponent who he respects like when he fought Dubois and Jennings you see a more defensively minded Joyce who doesn't just wade in. Much like Fury, Joyce fights to the level of his opponent and we will only see the best of him when he has an opponent he perceives as a threat. I get the criticism for this performance but when he does step up I expect to see a different Joyce.
Joyce's defence is absolutely porous but I'd still back him to beat all but 4 in the division. Fights with Joshua and Wilder would be competitive too.
