In San Antonio Texas undefeated WBC champion Marky Mark Magsayo defends his title for the first time against former undefeated WBC 122 champion and current mandatory challenger Rey Vargas. Magsayo won the title from Russell in January, in fact this is the first time in almost eight years that the WBC title will defend twice in the same year (amazing stuff!). Vargas fought last November, breaking a two year hiatus due a leg injury. Neither guy has set the world on fire. Magsayo dropped against the likes of Avalos and Ceja, looked incredibly mediocre against Gary Russell and has had a couple of uninspired performances. Vargas hasn't scored a KO win since his win over Munoz 6 years ago, dropped against Manzanilla and struggled against Kameda and Azat (not that's a major problem considering that both Tomoki and Azat are pretty good fighters).

Who are you fellas picking? Seems like this fight has flown under the radar and not many have talked about this one. Heck the only decent promo I found is this Pinoy one.

Magsayo violently knocks Ichabod Reyne's head clean into the 5th row, with an overhand out of nowhere, that Vargas never sees coming, and it'll be early.

Mark is slight favorite if you want to bet. Others see this fight as 50/50.

    Bet $200 to win $340 ? maybe

I think Vargas takes this one too. Magyso looked mediocre against a one armed GRJ. He should have stopped him.

Magsayo, was clueless against a one-armed, high IQ Gary Russell Jr. and almost lost a fight he should have dominated. The fight before that he was being schooled by Julio Ceja before saving his fight with a 10th round KO. At a different point in his career Vargas would have dominated him. However, Vargas has had just one fight in three years and while he once had an almost 80% knockout rate it has now been almost six years since he stopped anyone.

These guys are a combined 59-0 but are quite flawed. I'm going to go with the better past over the recent form and take Vargas by decision.

I picked Mags to beat GAR, but I gotta go Vargas here. Vargas has a somewhat questionable chin, but I don't think Magsayo is skilled enough to punish him. Vargas wide UD

I would say vargas by UD without hesitation had vargas remained active. But honestly, I dont think vargas is at 100% after that long period of inactivity.

On the other hand, magsayo looked like crap vs one handed russel. But 2 handed russel didnt do much while it lasted, he started to get better when he started to run for his life while being one handed. He run, he exposed a lot of magsayo's flaws.... but the truth is that he didnt win the rounds. It's way easier to be slick when you have no intention at all of winning the rounds.

I'm vargas #1 fan. I honestly wish he wins this fight and I will root for him, but I think that magsayo will take this one.

edit: plus it's at feather weight, let's be honest, a big % of vargas' boxing was his size and reach. I wish I could say that vargas will win, but I dont think so. I hope I am wrong, as a fan of him I'll be really glad if he wins.

Magsayo is the last champ of what has been a horrific year in P.I boxing. With losing streaks lol. But i don't think it will change soon. Magsayo is average at best and is clueless has no IQ in the ring. I actually expect a brutal KO. Magsayo's horrific defense and glass chin combo will not bode well.

    Vargas KO 6.

Vargas has questionable wins over Azat Hovhannisyan and Tomoki Kameda, and came within a hair of getting knocked the **** out by Manzanilla. He's a brutal KO waiting to happen, and at Featherweight he doesn't hit hard enough or control range well enough to keep Magsayo from landing that looping overhand.

Yeah, Well. He is an MP promotion boxer which Pacquiao doesn't even run. He has a shady mofo in charge of it.Sean Gibbons. Well, Pac is just an adviser at this point for Magsayo. He has told Mark to spar 200 rounds for this fight. So maybe he could pull it off. I see that he isn't vlogging on youtube like the other nincumpoot boxers from P.I. Magsayo is serious. I like that. So we will see...

I didn't watch the Hovhannisyan fight but I thought he clearly beat Tomoki in a competitive bout. I agree that going to FW could be risky but isn't Rey also like 5'10? Being 5'10 and fighting at 122 just seems unhealthy, he may be stronger at 126. The Filipino turtle just seems to get a lot of lucky breaks and it's just a matter of time his luck will run out.
