Excluding the obvious ‘coughs’ Ezzard Charles. Who’s the most overrated fighter in history?

Overrated doesn mean they were not great except for Pryor. It just means they are automatically considered the best ever far too much, and basically knee jerk responses to the question.

I know a lot here think Ali .... How can you miss 4 years of your absolute prime and have a resume like that?
Any other boxers accomplish that who were on that same level?
Theres a list that a lot did miss because of the war ....but
Ali huge underdog vs Liston and Foreman
    he's hardly overrated imo

Can’t believe anyone who really knows boxing would say Ali or Charles. Jesus. If those men are overrated no one is good.
I don’t think many are overrated. If anything maybe someone like RJJ gets overrated (I have him ranked well too). His resume is thin but not his fault. No one worth fighting was around

What is Ali to you then?

Because Ali, to the general public is the greatest fighter who has ever lived.

I published a "Top 100 Fighters of All Time" on boxing.com a decade back and Part 10 (1-10) got picked up by a major US sports website that got it so many hits it crashed boxing.com right off the internet. The article got about a million views.

Most interesting was the commentary that came with that in the comments section. It was really fun and informing - 90% of the comments were about Ali, who was six or seven all time. And people were horrified. 7, 8 guys wrote that they refused to read it because he wasn't number one. SO sure were they that Ali was far and away a greater fighter than Armstrong and Robinson that they considered any information associated with a contrary opinion invalid. Others were "horrified" thought it was "crazy" etc etc. They didn't just think Ali was the greatest, they thought he was the greatest to such a massive degree that there was no argument to the contrary.

So this is a wide sampling of bog-standard US sports fans indicates to me that Ali is the literal definition of overrated. It's hard to think that he has any serious competition or the spot actually.
