80's/90's gatekeepers?

Doesn`t make him a gatekeeper

 

Doesnt mean he was a World Champion either.

 

Check the record books he was.No record of him being a gatekeeper you are simply wrong end of discussion

 

In 97 the WBO wasnt recognised, his reign is meaningless end of discussion.

The WBO belt wasn`t respected at that time, he wasn`t considered a real champ by most.

 

Williams was a gate keeper by the time he fought Bruno and Biggs was a gate keeper when he fought Lewis, Mason and Bowe, Tubbs had slipped to gate keeper level when he met Bowe also, Pierre Coetzer was also a gate keeper that fought Bruno, Foreman and Bowe.

 

That might be so but he's still better than gatekeeper in the 90's. His losses were to Holmes. Holyfield. Lewis and Ferguson.
Three of those are ATG's. He was expected to beat Holmes and underperformed. was competitive with Lewis and went the distance with Holyfield.
So really only his fight with Ferguson was a really weak performance. As I said he was patchy but on form was clearly a handful and came with good pedigree in the Am's and an Olympic Gold medal. So personally Mercer is a level up from gatekeeper.
