Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Eddie Davis

    1 Qawi 10-8
    2 Qawi
    3 Davis
    4 Qawi
    5 Davis
    6 Davis
    7 Qawi
    8 Qawi
    9 Davis
    10 Qawi
    11 Qawi wins by TKO

    96-93 Qawi

Amazing fight wow the heart Davis showed in this fight just made you want to stand up and applaud him this fight looked over in the 1st round. Qawi knocked Davis down heavily with a deadly combination the uppercut was the punch that started all the trouble. Davis barely got up and looked absolutely gone, how he managed to get up and survive the round is beyond me.

But from then for the next 8 rounds Davis gave Qawi absolute hell, Davis stood in the trenches with Qawi and was able to land frequently with the uppercut which makes sense against the shorter opponent bobbing and weaving. At times it looked like Davis might pull off a miracle, as he was able to outwork Qawi at times which don't seem possible considering the kind of fighter Qawi is. And anytime Qawi would pin Davis towards the ropes Davis would explode off the ropes with combinations.

Basically from rounds 2-9 this was an all out war fought head to head shoulder the shoulder both men taking turns in having there moments in a grueling battle.

The 10th round is where this fight completely turned around for Qawi, i noticed Qawi wasn't throwing or landing that many body punches throughout the fight. But half way through the 10th round Qawi landed a brutal body shot that hurt Davis. And i honestly think that one body punch turned the fight around, as from then on Qawi absolutely battered Davis along the ropes. Davis was badly hurt and was wobbling as he went back to his corner.

At the start of the 11th round Qawi rushed into the middle of the ring, as Davis was very slow getting off his stool. Qawi then proceeded to go all out and attack Davis. Davis was floored again he got up but was badly hurt with his eyes glazed and not knowing where he was, this time the referee rightly stops the fight as Davis's 9 lives finally run out.

Overall a very underrated war this one, for me it's an absolute classic and fights like this is why this era was the best ever for Light Heavyweights. Qawi is just an absolute machine and Davis was just inhuman with the heart he showed, i've often heard people say Michael Spinks had an off night vs Davis but did he ? or was Davis just that good ? because judging him in this fight and the Michael Spinks fight, i would tend to believe at his best he's up there.

Victor Galindez vs Richie Kates 1

    1 Kates
    2 Kates
    3 Kates
    4 Galindez
    5 Galindez
    6 Galindez
    7 Galindez 10-8 knockdown
    8 Kates
    9 Galindez
    10 Galindez
    11 Galindez
    12 Kates
    13 Kates
    14 Kates
    15 Galindez wins by KO

    133-132 Galindez

What can i say about this fight ? amazing courage shown by Galindez dealing with the horrendous cut, and amazing courage shown by Kates especially in rounds 7 9 10 he took a tremendous beating in these rounds, and i'm not really sure how he got through these rounds to make it to the 15th round.

When i was watching this fight i was thinking, Kates is having a pretty easy nights work behind the jab in first 2 and half rounds. Then when Kates opened up a horrendous cut on Galindez via a accident headbutt. Then the fight stopped being a pretty jabbing exhibition for Kates and turned into an all out war.

When the fight was halted because of the cut, it was a very strange occurrence. Reporters and cameramen went into the fight thinking that Kates had won the fight, and it took almost 10 minutes to clear the ring. A very strange incident that i hadn't personally seen before.

When the fight eventually resumed Galindez went all out attack no holds barred, and anytime Galindez opened up he seemed to have Kates in trouble. As i noted earlier Kates went down in the 7th round, and took a tremendous beating in rounds 7 9 10. Kates's boxing behind the jab which was working so well for him early on, was no longer apparent as Galindez would not allow him to box, and just punished him along the ropes with a two fisted attacked.

I did feel Galindez let up a bit in rounds 12-14, as Kates was able to come forward and back up Galindez. Who wasn't really doing much work as he was in the middle rounds, this tightened the fight up on my card and going into the 15th round, i had it 7-7 in rounds but Galindez up 1 point because of the knockdown.

The 15th round i felt like Kates was slightly edging the round until the last 30 seconds, Galindez got a second wind and started to land some big punches. With seconds to go in the fight Galindez lands 3 left hooks in a row with the last one being a peach of a punch, and Kates goes down and is counted out and Galindez wins by KO with seconds left in the fight, to win one of the most dramatic fights you'll ever see.

Overall amazing fight amazing courage shown by both fighters, and once again this fight shows how amazing the Light Heavyweight era was at this time. Kates also comes so close again like he had against Muhammad but it wasn't to be.

I watched one of my favourites Herol Graham vs Mike McCallum for the first time since I watched them live all those years ago. Not the greatest fight, and hardly anything between them. Herol was so far ahead early on, but Bodysnatcher just went through the gears after halfway. Herol’s wrestling and holding cost him the win in my view. My unbiased scoring is:

    Round 1: Graham 10-9
    Round 2: Even 10-10
    Round 3: McCallum 10-9
    Round 4: Graham 10-9
    Round 5: Graham 10-9
    Round 6: Graham 10-9
    Round 7: Graham 10-9
Round 8: McCallum 10-8 (Herol point deducted)
    Round 9: McCallum 10-9
    Round 10: Graham 10-9
    Round 11: McCallum 10-9
    Round 12: McCallum 10-9

114-114! …I marked each round without adding up until the final round. So no jiggery pokery going on.

    Jai Opetaia vs Mairis Briedis

    1 Opetaia
    2 Opetaia
    3 Opetaia
    4 Opetaia
    5 Opetaia
    6 Opetaia
    7 Briedis
    8 Briedis
    9 Briedis
    10 Briedis
    11 Briedis
    12 Briedis

    114-114 Draw

I don't think i can remember last time i scored a shut out for both fighters in two halves of the fight, Optetaia won all the early rounds based on his boxing, ring generalship, landing all the effective punches left hand, jab, occasional uppercut.

Breidis won all the later rounds based on his power punching with the right hand, and being the effective aggressor.

I could see 115-113 either way have no problem with Opetaia winning a close decision.

My man @George Crowcroft needs to get in here and check out @Dynamicpuncher reviving the greatest era of the light heavyweight division.

So many good fighters. So many good fights.

At one point you have all these guys going at it at 175:

    Matthew Saad Muhammad

    Marvin Johnson

    Victor Galindez

    James Scott

    Eddie Mustafa Muhammad

    Mike Rossman

    Michael Spinks (on the rise)

    Dwight Muhammad Qawi

    Yaqui Lopez

    John Conteh

Not to mention guys like Richie Kates, Eddie Davis, Jerry Martin, Jesse Burnett, Jerry Celestine and a bunch of others who on any given night could beat many of those top guys.

I had Opetaia winning narrowly, but calling the draw is understandable…it was a close fight.
I see that two of the judges called 116-112 for Opetaia…home country scoring I suspect

For any who care, me and my Pop and my brother (with his oldest daughter standing by and asking him, ‘Why didn’t you ever tell me all of this???’) talked about the fights we went to together over the years — starting with Pop taking me to amateur shows when I was like sixth grade … and to find out his uncle was a fighter (I don’t think a pro, just smokers … he told us about him dying in a car wreck leaving after having a fight).

So many good stories — we met Larry Holmes in a casino when he was fighting (on his comeback trail the next night) and him challenging my father — ‘I’ll fight you next, you’re old enough; I’m tired of fighting all these young guys’ and playful throwing shadowbox jabs at Pop) and seeing Holyfield a couple of times in Atlanta (including Qawi) and other such stories.

It was a highlight of our family holiday gathering. Pop is in his 80s and has had some health issues and we all know, without really talking out loud about it, that we only have so many holidays left together with him.

I will cherish this one, and this forum prompted me to make sure we talked boxing. So thank you all.

You can get there. Opetaia had decent cases for shading a couple of rounds in the second half of the fight.

Pat, been off the grid for the last week - and I do mean off the grid - and just started to check back with past posts. This one really clicked with me. I envy you with the time you still have with your Pops. Mine's been gone these good few years now, and I totally miss those recurring fight nights we spent together, those boxing events, those fishing trips. Moreover, I got into the same line of work as he, and when he would come over, my wife would just say, "Ok, that's it for me. I know where this conversation is going. It's going to be boxing, fishing and the job." So, enjoy every moment of it, my man.

Thanks man, from the heart. I’m sorry your Pop is gone but cherish the time you had with him.

I was blessed with a good and caring father. Sometimes he was tough but it was out of love. Some years ago when we were living in the same town (just moved back to be near him and mom), I got an impulse to buy the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and decided to call him up. He brought over wings and we had a ball — fight wasn’t all that great, but the time we had was.

Now we usually text when the fights are on, but on ocassion we get to catch one on TV together. It doesn’t matter who is fighting … it matters that we get to share that time.

Bobby Chacon vs Cornelius Boza Edwards 2

Round 1: 10-8 Chacon Weird end to a good round. I thought CBE won but at the last second there was a dubious knockdown scored by Chacon. Gonna go with the 10-8 mandatory there.
Round 2: 10-8 Chacon. Nothing dubious about that one.
Round 3: 10-8 CBE. Chacon goes down.
    Round 4: 10-9 CBE. Close.
    Round 5: 10-10 Even. What a round.
Round 6: 10-9 CBE. CBE is the aggressor an throwing more.
    Round 7: 10-9 CBE. Close.
Round 8: 10-9 CBE. Close again.
Round 9: 10-9 CBE. I wanna give a round to Chacon but I can't when he's taking uppercuts and hooks all round.
Round 10: 10-10 Even. Chacon can't lift his arms, CBE can barely stand. Wow.
    Round 11: 10-9 Chacon. Barely.
Round 12: 10-8 Chacon. Dramatic stuff.

    My card: 113-113 Draw

Official Cards: 115-113, 117-111 and 115-112 all for Chacon.

Wow I thought Chacon barely got a draw with the final KD but apparently the judges were scoring low blows.

I'm kidding. it was a great fight, though 117-111 Chacon does seem ridiculous.

    How i scored it.

Bobby Chacon vs Cornelius Boza Edwards 2

    1 Chacon 10-9 for me this wasn't a knockdown
    2 Chacon 10-8 knockdown
    3 Edwards 10-8 knockdown
    4 Edwards
    5 Edwards
    6 Edwards
    7 Edwards
    8 Edwards
    9 Chacon
    10 Chacon
    11 Chacon
    12 Chacon 10-8 knockdown

    113-112 Chacon

So after watching their 1st fight i thought i'd watch this classic again, as i've only seen it once and that years ago. I'm not really gonna go into a full detailed analysis, as pretty much everyone knows about this classic fight, but i'll just point out a few things.

The knockdown in the 1st round for me wasn't a knockdown, Boza Edwards was already going down after slipping and then Chacon hit him. For me that's not a legit knockdown and there's no way Chacon deserves a 10-8 round for that, as Edwards was clearly winning the round and that was more of a slip.

I felt like Edwards pretty much controlled rounds 3-8 he was the constant aggressor, backing up Chacon on the ropes and was outlanding Chacon 2-1, Chacon would have spurts where he would fight off the ropes and land some decent right hands and flurries. But for me it wasn't enough to win the rounds in which Edwards was working for 3 minutes of the round.

The fight for me started to turn around in the 9th round, Edwards punches didn't have the same power as they had earlier. And Chacon was now starting to land the better punches off the ropes. From then on it was all Chacon for me as he swept rounds 9-12, and with the big rally in the 12th round with the knockdown, Chacon wins the fight by 1 point on my card.

Overall the fight was as good as i remember, although i don't remember Ferdie Pacheco being so over dramatic with his commentary regarding Chacon. I'm not gonna lie it was a bit grating on my ears, like mate Chacon is always fighting back he's in a great fight competing well, why do you keep spouting about Chacon has a family and etc and wanting to stop the fight ?

Lastly i do think the 1st round is kind of controversial ? for me this isn't a legit knockdown. And i never see this talked about when discussing this fight, and for me this round made the difference on my scorecard.

Ferdie never called a fight he didn’t want stopped.

Except Benn-McClellan, where he kept criticizing McClellan for blinking non-stop ignoring the fact that this is a sign of neurological damage and him being, you know, a doctor. Basically ripping him for not having heart. SMFH.

He also did the same in the Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Eddie Davis fight i see recently, although to be fair even Davis's manager also wanted the fight stopped after the 1st round. But again Ferdie kept making a big point of it, criticizing the referee and etc. Even though Davis was competing very well vs Qawi. Yes Davis did take a hammering in the 1st round, but clearly the referee made the right call as Davis recovered and put on a heck of a performance for another 10 rounds.
