    MOST SPECTACULAR KNOCKOUTS

Looking for a TOP 25 list from each volunteer.

The THREE main guiding principles are:
    1. The fights MUST be available on video
    2. Professional Matches ONLY
    3. You can edit your list up until the deadline, but if you do so PLEASE edit your original post where you submitted your list (or working draft).

    MANDATORY GUIDELINES!

For this to work I need people to STRICTLY ADHERE to these GUIDELINES! So any lists that DO NOT adhere to the guidelines will be dismissed at the DEADLINE

    This content is protected
    This content is protected
    This content is protected
    This content is protected
(and if applicable, if they fought more than once, you must note which fight 1, 2, 3, 4, etc).
[Doesn't have to be color-coded, just wanted it easier to read]

Lists MUST be numbered, in order, no ties. Looking for a Top 25 from each volunteer.

    WHAT DEFINES A KO?

For our purposes here, it doesn't matter whether it was officially a KO or TKO. But in the case of a TKO, the losing fighter must have been dropped in the immediate lead-up to the ref (or corner) waving it off. We're not looking for tough dudes who never went down and get stopped on their feet.

But if the dropped boxer manages to make it up wobbly, and the ref/corner stop it, that's fair game.

If anyone has any questions, DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK!

To clarify @Rumsfeld — you want a list of 25 ranked from most to 25th most ‘spectacular’ as we choose to define that term, or rank them by which we like the best in order (as in our favorites or using some criteria of our choosing on ‘spectacularness’)?

Also, by saying you’re available for questions, you’re willing to make rulings on if a fight fits? (Like Caveman Lee-John LoCicero might or might not be one I’d consider — actually IIRC the video of the fight more or less misses the KO … or barely captures it at a bad angle — but I’m not sure if we’d say both are contenders. I’m not asking for a ruling on that one at this time, but as an example of the type ruling that might be needed.) I’d hate to have mine tossed because it didn’t fit your rules.

This sounds like another great Rummy video that I look forward to seeing, and thanks for setting the deadline far enough out to give us time to really think things through and do this right. I appreciate your contributions to this forum and boxing history/fandom in general.

Yeah, definitely a sequential list, #1 being what you consider "most spectacular" and #25 being what you consider "25th most spectacular". How you define "spectacular" is completely up to you.

As for the fringe contenders, yes I'll try and make judgments. I'm likewise HOPING that people can help contribute if they see any submissions that don't fit the bill.

I was honestly debating over whether or not I should even include that as part of the criteria.

My goal here isn't to try and overlimit the scope. But at the same time, I'm trying to exclude the likes of Hartley-Zelenoff (which wouldn't have qualified anyway, if I recall correctly).

It's a great question, however. Caveman Lee would fit the bill for me as a former title challenger. LoCicero? Oh boy, I see what you're saying here. Perhaps I should either eliminate that prerequisite, or narrow it down to at least 1 need have been a fringe contender (which was what I had originally considered).

    Open to suggestions here.

And no, I wouldn't just blanket toss someone because of one mention that is not 'permitted'. At least not without giving ample time to make adjustments.

Good man. My suggestion would be to keep the criteria as is but err on the side of inclusion. I’m not sure LoCicero was ever ranked but he was a feared puncher in his day and if he wins the Lee fight he may indeed have gotten that ranking — looking at the timeline, it’s not out of the question that he might have gotten the shot at Hagler even.

I look forward to participating. Ol’ Saintpat will definitely file a top 25 here my friend. Please keep up the good work.

I was planning to almost always err on the side of inclusion. But I hope to be stricter on TKO inclusions where a fighter wasn't dropped in the immediate lead-up to the stoppage.

I adjusted the wording on guideline #3 in the hopes of more accurately reflecting the intention of that guideline.

I look forward to seeing your list, as well as everyone else who participates. Thinking this through in my head, this is difficult!

I'm not personally participating per usual, but I wouldn't have the slightest idea where to even begin!

As always, adjustments will be allowed up until the deadline. If a late comer makes an entry that is a good call that was overlooked by others, or if you think of a fight you had totally forgotten about when you made your list, you can always feel free to adjust up until the deadline.

I also added a 4th guideline on editing.

If anyone needs to edit their list prior to the deadline PLEASE edit your original submission post if you need to make any changes.

OK this is just to try and get the juices flowing, not a list yet.

    Owen Moran Vs Battling Nelson
    Joe Louis Vs Charley Retzlaff
    Jack Sharkey Vs Tommy Loughran
    Max Baer Vs Max Schmeling
    Floyd Patterson Vs Archie Moore
Danny Williams Vs Mark Potter (does this count? Not sure what the boundary for fringe contender is)

Just in terms of format, if it’s a fight that is one of a series, is this how it should look?

Antonio Tarver KO2 Roy Jones 2

    OR

Antonio Tarver KO2 Roy Jones, fight 2

I like the addendum/explainer to item 3. It clarifies the parameters and intent well.

OK. Here are my own self-imposed ground rules to help me narrow it down.

I tried to limit it to one KO per fighter so I could pick the absolute best, most spectacular KO that each fighter produced. So KO specialists like Bob Foster, Ruben Olivares, Alexis Arguello, Thomas Hearns, Julian Jackson and Mike Tyson get one each. I also tried to cover a broader range of weight classes rather than just go for heavyweight KOs. Other than that, I’ve tried to be objective… well, as objective as I can be about something that is quite subjective. Some KOs I’ve listed were a combination of the aesthetics and the shock value. And some just stick in my memory more than others, I guess.

I’m 100% happy with my number 1 - it ticks every box.

Really hard to separate the rest, particularly the great KOs in terms of significance versus the spectacular but less significant. So, I’m not putting either Robinson’s KO of Fullmer or Marciano’s KO of Walcott on my list because although these are undoubtedly all-time great KOs and aesthetically beautiful, there were ones that I consider less great historically but more spectacular.

The first way is fine. In this case, the results are different in all 3 fights, so I would know that KO2 referenced fight #2. I guess this is more important in an instance where boxers had multiple fights with the same result, such as Liston-Patterson. As long as I can figure out the difference, it's fine.

This thread is already paying dividends. Great list by Jel plus it inspired me to rewatch Caveman Lee vs. John LoCicero — what a war. Not sure the KO makes the cut but it had been a few years and that is one heckuva scrap.
