Steroids of course. And good old amphetamines. Perhaps trickier to find a reason to prescribe than Thyrolar, but he could have said it was for someone else. From experience of a father and grand father as doctors there didn't seem to be much problem to to get stuff back in the day. Not many questions asked. Thyrolar just seems such an odd choice, with its side effects and all. You'd expect it would have been used by someone else if effective, but I never have heard it has been. The Benzendrine found when testing Ali after Holmes seems more suspicious, I think.
For those interested, a few sources on the Thyrolar. With lots of people saying, "Wasn't my fault!" after the fact: https://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-ali-jim-murray-19920721-story.html https://www.upi.com/Archives/1980/1...Tuesday-he-was-taking-a-double/6780339739200/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/arch...ve-died/b67ab02d-8e88-4f3c-87ca-08c594e082e1/
Didn't know about the Benzedrine. That's interesting; I'll have to add it. Sounds like he was already using one of your two recommendations, then. Steroids, I wonder to what extent those would be a go-to at this stage. If Ali's doctor was as incompetent as you think (and scientific knowledge of PEDs was still pretty new), maybe it was just a bad choice of PED. Duran's and Hazelton's reported experiences with early PED experiments were apparently pretty bad, too. On the Thyrolar, the thing is, are we sure it would've still had bad side effects if Ali hadn't abused it? Remember that even aside from the doctor's incompetence, Ali wrecked things by not using the drug as directed. EDIT: And it did help him lose weight, FWIW.
1) Hire quack doctor. 2) Get Thyrolar from quack doctor, who may (or may not) be trying to help you with PEDs. 3) Notice how much Thyrolar helps as a PED to increase energy and burn fat, regardless of whether quack doctor intended it to or not. 4) Double down on using Thyrolar against quack doctor's explicit instructions. ????? 6) Beat Larry Holmes ????? 9) Remain champion forever.
Can't really know what went through Ali's doctot's mind, but Thyrolar just seems such an odd choice that I think his explanation seems plausible enough. Benzendrine which was found if I remember correctly, should have the same effects and would be a more typical choice. Yeah, double check if I'm correct, but if the Mayo clinic found Benzendrine that seems to fit the bill of PED better imo.
Could be. But whichever way you slice it, Ali was definitely attempting to use the Thyrolar as a PED. The thing everybody did agree on is that Ali went out of his way to take massive doses of Thyrolar to increase his energy and/or lose weight. The doctor might have been incompetent, or in on it. (Or both!) The Pacheco quotes suggest to me that he believed the doctor was involved, but they aren't really decisive, IMO.
Stanozolol was used by Ben Johnson, so his world record was not recognized; not sure about the gold medal. This content is protected I don't understand how marijuana can be treated as an anabolic steroid, but the fight Mike Tyson Vs Andrew Golota was first declared TKO2 (or RTD) and later No contests, because Mike Tyson allegedly used marijuana (I'm sure he didn't come to the fight "high "). Marijuana is not an anabolic steroid, but it is a banned substance that boxers have used and been caught for. So I added it to the list. Tyson believes it helped him, for what it's worth.
Tyson literally smoked right before that fight, there was some hip hop/rap crew that ring walked/entranced with him and they smoked him out in the locker room This content is protected
