coming back after a knockdown to win a decision

I was going down a Teddy Atlas rabbit hole and ended up watching highlights of him cornering Moorer against Holyfield in their first fight, which Moorer got knocked down and came back to win a decision

Atlas kept going off about how Moorer was blowing it and not doing his best, so clearly he was behind on points in fact I think Atlas straight up tells him he's losing the fight, I will have to watch the full fight again as it's been too long, but the narrator pointed out how Moorer came on a little bit more aggressively at one point and then had backed off again before his moment at the end

how were those two moments, mostly his moment at the end, enough to give him more points than Holyfield who was already up on points and had knocked him down, was it literally only because that one judge scored the knockdown round a draw?

don't get me wrong it was great to see Atlas get that out of Moorer, but was Holyfield robbed? yeah Moorer came on at the end but Holyfield was still getting off too it's not like the ref was about to stop it

that got me wondering, has this ever happened when it did not involve a judge doing something "controversial" and the fighter legitimately came back enough to win on a decision?

 

Thinking this over to try to come up with some examples without any data to prove it, it seems more often that a guy who gets knocked down and comes back to wins more often does it by stoppage. I could come up with a ton of those but the decision route is tricker.

Here here’s a couple:

Bobby Chacon was knocked down twice in his fourth match with Bazooka Limon and won by decision. He scored a knockdown of his own in the 15th round to seal a unanimous (but close) decision.

Alexis Arguello was knocked down by Jose Luis Ramirez and won a split decision over 10 rounds. I gave it to JLR by a narrow margin when I scored it, but it was close. While I saw it for Ramirez, I don’t think it was a robbery — very competitive and could have gone either way.

 

I have watched Joe Frazier do that (win the decision) against Oscar Bonavena. And Oscar knocked him down twice!

 

Rafael Ruelas got off the deck twice in round 1 to decision Freddie Pendleton for the IBF lightweight title

 

Wlad v Peter

 

Carl Williams was down twice in the first round against Quick Tillis and came back to not only win but win easily......if I've read the thread correctly.

 

Malinga down heavily vs Benn

 

Manuel Medina down twice vs Troy Dorsey comeback to win most of the rounds and win a comfortable decision.

James Page also down twice vs Jose Luis Lopez comeback to win on points.

 

I don't think you can take a trainer's comments to their fighter as a substitute for scoring the fight. I think they just tell them what they think will get the most out of them.

Personaly I've never scored that fight, and I don't have much intention of either tbh.

There's plenty of examples of getting who got knocked down winning the decision, I can't think of many ones where the guy who was knocked down was behind at that time though TBH. Ward Vs Kovalev I is the first I can think of.

I've seen guys get dropped in the first, then win the decision too, if that counts, though mostly on undercard fights. There's the famous Tommy Loughran one where he was dropped badly twice in the first IIRC.

 

Timothy Bradley down twice vs Kendall Holt won a decision.

Robert Hines down twice vs Matthew Hilton won a decision.

Two very good fights aswell worth watching.

Just off the top of my head and not thinking too hard, I’m guessing Ali must have done it. I’ve seen him on the deck a few times so surely he must have won a decision or two after taking a short rest on the canvas?

Nope, as I’m writing and thinking, I believe he KO’d everyone who knocked him down.
Except JF of course, who got the decision.

Back to the drawing board…

 

Joe Frazier vs Oscar Bonavena took place on Sept 21 1966, Frazier emerged with a close decision victory despite suffering two knockdowns in the same round. They fought again on Dec 10 1968, Frazier defending his 5 state title, Frazier won on points in 15 rounds.
