On Patterson he was a 20 year pro twice heavyweight champion,5 of his 8 defeats were to Ali,Liston and Johansson ,one earlier disputed loss to Maxim, a split dec loss to Quarry ,and a highly controversial loss to Ellis. He was top ten ranked for over 12 years! You criminally underate him.

It's your guess that they would beat Liston, and you're probably quite alone in making it. What we know for a fact is that Floyd did every bit as well as those guys and was in s prime, unlike Schmeling.

With or without Ali, Frazier would have been undefeated and have had cleaned out the other top contenders when Foreman crushed him like an empty can. So even then it would have been better than any win Louis had. For reference.

I would also say that winning the undisputed HW title some 20 years after his physical prime shows that Foreman was a very good fighter.

I don't agree, Frazier would always cause Ali a lot of problems. We can also say that Liston likely wasn't at his best anymore in their fights as well.

At the same time, I can't see Louis ever losing to Norton. Even old Louis would beat Spinks as well.

Always causing problems is not winning.

Ali fought Norton when he was 31 and 34, want to go back and see how Louis was faring at around the same age? lol You don't think the Louis that may have lost to Walcott at the age of 33 might have had problems with Norton?

Everyone knows, and many have mentioned the break in Muhammad Ali's career due to non-military service.
Everyone probably knows, but no one has mentioned the break in Joe Louis' career due to military service (1942-1945).
So let's see how many fights Joe Louis had during World War II:
    1939: 4-0
    1940: 4-0
    1941: 7-0
    1942: 2-0
    1943: did not fight
    1944: 1-0
    1945: did not fight

    Johansson or Bonavena
    Then he had
    Jackson
    Moore
    Chuvalo
    Machen
    Slade
    Harris
    Durelle
    Cooper
    London
    Better resume than
    Corbett
    Hart
    Burns
    Willard
    Tunney
    Baer
    Braddock
    Carnera
    Spinks M
    Spinks L
    Wilder
    And all the alphabet champs.

What would Frazier’s best accomplishment be? Beating Quarry and a few alright guys and being crushed by Foreman? Without Ali Frazier is held in a way lower esteem.

Did Louis come back and beat 2 ranked challengers as good as Quarry and Bonavena?
Did Louis go 3 and a half years without a fight?
Did Louis have over 200 exhibitions during that time period whilst Ali was going around trying to earn a crust giving talk ins?
Did Louis come back and fight an undefeated champion like Frazier?
Or did he come back and fight a collection of non punchers before being beat up by Charles and belted out by Marciano?

Don't take it so personally. I did not criticize Muhammad Ali.
What I wanted to say is that Joe Louis would probably have an even better score, resume, legacy; more precisely to defend the title more than 25 times.
