Kovalev I is a way tougher fight than Calzaghe ever had.

How do we think Calzaghe wouldve done against the version of Kovalev that Ward fought in the first fight? Honestly I think he wouldve gotten touched bad. Ward had to hold and rough-house Kovalev to blunt his offense and make it an inside-fight. Calzaghe was a high volume slapper. He wouldnt have deterred Kovalev's advances.

Kovalevs best win was beating a fighter Calzaghe beat years previously in Hopkins

I do agree that it is often a bigger win when facing an undefeated champ
If you think Kessler was the same when Ward fought him to Calzaghe, then there is no reason not to think Kovalev not the same when Alvarez fought him to Ward

Kovalev was an undefeated 30-0-1 unified champ when Ward fought him
Kessler was an undefeated 39-0-0 unified champ when Calzaghe fought him

Eubank also had a far greater resume when Calzaghe beat him

    I think far better
Kovalev didn't really do a great deal more than jab
I don't think that would have troubled Calzaghe as much as it did Ward

Umm Kovalev was a light heavyweight. Not a super middle. Kovalev would’ve hurt Calzaghe. Ward was able to blunt a lot of Kovalev’s offense bc of his savvy, defensive skills and dirty boxing. Calzaghe didn’t possess any of those defensive intangibles
to quell an opponents offensive firepower. He out-volumed guys at 168. Won with offense and more offense.

He was a LHW whos biggest win was a fighter Calzaghe beat years previously
He was a LHW who lost to lesser fighters than Kessler

I think you are trying to use the weight division to bolster something when resume says otherwise

Calzaghe didn't always win on volume, that was just one asset to his game
Yes he threw alot of punches due to his fitness
I don't think just a fighter jabbing would be enough to beat as versatile a fighter as Calzaghe

Super Joe was hardly prime by the time he moved up to LHW, his impressive punch resistance had clearly diminished by that point, and his hands were shot to pieces so it's hardly fair to pit that version of him against prime LHWs.

Calzaghe’s best wins were Kessler, Hopkins, Jones. Let’s say his absolute prime was when he beat Kessler. Put that guy in the ring with the Kovalev that fought Ward the first time…Kovalev wins.

We can debate his best wins, that is your opinion and not something I am necessarily dismissing (though may not completely agree) but to say his prime was in his middle late 30s after over 40 fights and around 20 world title fights is ridiculous

Let's not forget that Ward had retired from boxing younger than Calzaghe was when he fought Lacy, with far fewer fights

I don't want to be rude to you but with what you wrote, I am doubtful you know or followed his career

It’s impossible to judge what his level really was fighting scrubs in his alleged prime compared to what his level was when he fought Kessler. Guys have a habit of looking better against trashcans.

all this blowing smoke up Wards ass over Kovalev tho.. give me a break.. everybody in boxing knows that was a robbery , Ward won 4 rounds.. he then juiced up with extra HGH gravy in the rematch.. Calzaghe looked like you could blow him over in a stiff breeze.. get Ward on neutral territory without the steroids and a referee that doesn't allow his muay Thai and wrestling and Calzaghe would slap the s*** out of him.. Kovalev was a phenomenal fighter but he never really looked the same after he got screwed in that first fight.. spanked by Eleider, Canelo & was almost KOd by novice Yarde in fact.. Ward knew he got lucky & then Kovalev began hitting the bottle rather than the bags.. Calzaghe wasnt a LHW anyway.. in fact he used to fight as a welterweight in his late teens.. Ward at the same age was fighting at fkin light heavyweight... & moving forward to 2018 he was a muscled 200lbs.. ripped.. when he was contemplating HW.. not a fat inactive 35/40 year olds 200lbs, a guy still pretty much in his prime.. Ward was a juice head who treated the ring like an octagon, make it an even playing field and the Welshman bends him over.. arrogant yanks
