Do you think Khan would have done well if he had been trained by Ronnie Shields? Shields might have been the one to fix Khan's defense.
Khans offense was his best defense. He got over-zealous after the Peterson robbery, got clobbered by Danny Garcia for it, then “over-corrected” by trying to be more defensive than benefited him and his assets - in my opinion, of course, I could be wrong. He would have been best suited to improve his distance control (or maybe just “control” in general) - and basically keep on trucking the way Freddie had him going.
It's not about trainers. Nothing can fix Khan's fundamental flaws, although Virgil did teach him some nice defensive, although that falls out the window when the pressure gets high. Ring circle, high guard is Khan's go to. Ultimately where did Khan go wrong? Management, underestimating opponents, Poor training practises (gym wars) If he followed a path to maximise what he had he could have dominated 140 till maybe 2012...then moved up to 147 beat a few Welterweights who weren't true Welters like Alexander, Bradley, Marquez (ducked Khan) etc then retired chasing a Pac Floyd payday which would have never came. Instead Bradley ducked in a shrude business move, Khan jumped in the deep end fighting PEDerson in his hometown with hometown refs and judges and got robbed (although it was a close fight - because Khan was having gym wars whilst Roach trained Pac). Then for the rematch which got nuked because Peterson failed his drug tests D.Garcia came along, a no name but a tough tough counterpuncher who was severely underestimated, the rest is history. Garcia also throws with his opponent trading, Khan can beat counterpunchers but guys who are willing to take one to land one are bad news. This is why the best boxers know their division and sport inside out...Khan didn't know who Danny Garcia was but all of the American fights who grew up in the amateur system knew he was no joke, abit crude and unorthodox but still a solid fighter. You think Tyson Fury doesn't know about the upcoming heavyweights? of course he does and has sparred many of them. Boxing is warfare, if you aren't engrossed in the art of war & dedicated someone will beat you. Khan rested on his laurels, not introspective enough. Even AJ is fairly introspective...but again fatally flawed and he knows it.
Nah i'd say it was defence. Maidana & Peterson laid their best on him and he survived...A little ring smarts in the clinch department would have helped him a lot.
Better defense would have canceled out Khan's chin, or at least kept him from getting knocked out so much.
Khan paid for all the best trainers in the world and still was a joke. Clearly no trainer could fix his flaws.
Khan was at his best when he came out and jumped on people, overwhelming them with his speed, and using his feet to either maintain range or get in and out. Trying to make him much more defensive could potentially mess up him up psychologically and take too much away from his strengths. (Which are often under-stated on this forum) Id agree with some clinch work being something that would have benefitted him, but as far as “defense” goes, I think that’s about it - outside of refining what he was already doing.
A bigger problem than Khan's chin or defense is that he's just not a very smart fighter. He has a bad chin, but he seems to think he has an iron chin, with the way he blocks punches with his face. He fights like he thinks he has to "prove" that he has a good chin, when he just doesn't, but he refuses to accept that.
Amir Khan is always under Amir khan that's his problem, Seriously though if he stayed consistent with Roach but especially with Alex Arzia due to him actually being good at his job & with him actually training all year out instead of his big break's in-between he would have had better success.
Your right, though when the Flaws are within the Fighter no Trainer can do anything about that, Man what a tried subject.
