A hard knockdown in the very first round tends to have an adverse effect on one's legs, yeah. Gomez's legs looked fine until then. All minute and a half leading up to that.

I tend to discount a lot of claims of "well it doesn't count because that loss came 12 minutes after what I perceive to be their prime" silliness. Odd how Gomez was riding a 32-fight KO streak going into the fight but the instant he steps inside the ropes against the guy that beats him he becomes past his sell-by date.

Sorry, too convenient and we've seen a thousand variations of this argument, and honestly they all sound the same. The implied argument is that a prime version of a given fighter can't be beaten, at least by the guy that turned the trick, so the marker is moved to suit the argument.

I respect greynotsoold, he's terrific and a font of great information, but I soundly disagree here.

Sanchez performance against Gomez is certainly one of the best of that decade and the ones against Lopez were very convincing. You'd expect him to have an easier time with green versions of Laporte and Nelson, though, but he did get the Ws. Fate robbed us of seeing his true potential so we can only guess, but one can still enjoy what he did give us.

I can't see I've ever seen Norton being named a great fighter so don't know who you're arguing with there. But he stayed a top contender for half a decade, which isn't bad, and clearly was a very difficult opponent for non-punchers, which he proved against Holmes. Never seen anyone give him more praise than that.

I would agree with you that Foreman arguably only becomes great when taking his two careers together. His prime resume is a bit thin and rests heavily on his destruction of Frazier, which indeed was very impressive, though. How his career would have turned out without Ali we can only speculate: maybe he'd always come unstuck on Young or perhaps he'd dominate at least until Holmes. But we do know that young Foreman's resume is a bit thin. Too thin for a top 10 place imo. But he's still a better win than most champions have, certainly when they're themselves past their prime.

Iv noticed most people lean towards Sanchez and then some say Cowdell won. I was planning to rescore that fight next.

I can't say I've ever seen anyone here who wrote that he thought Cowdell won. A great effort from Pat, but that would be a stretch.

I havent seen anyone say Pat had won on this forum either but Sanchez vs Cowdell is number 18 out of 50 as the most questionable wins. Not sure if the 18 spot means anything though because this list isn't in any paticular order I think.
Sanchez won a split decision with the 15th round knock down. It looks like 2 of the judges had Sanchez winning even with out the knockdown.
Do you think it was the knockdown in the 15th round that gave Sanchez the victory? Was this fight as close as I think it was?

I had Sanchez slightly ahead after 14, so the knockdown wasn't real necessary on my card at least. I thought the Ford fight was closer. I had that dead even after 14.

I've read that Gomez was absurdly overconfident going into the fight, didn't train as he should have and had major weight issues ... all possible excuses but that is what I have read .. regardless, Sanchez did the number on him that defined his career even more than what he did to Lopez because Gomez at the time was a great fighter .. funny how Sanchez destroy him like he did Zarate ..

I've read the same excuses of overconfidence, but how was his attitude any different for Sanchez than it was for anyone else he beat at that point? Gomez always had that air of egotism.

In the case of Nelson I think people just tend to look at one side of it. Azumah was green, inexperienced on the championship but he was also unknown to Sanchez. Azumah Nelson was a pretty special fighter in his own right. His strength, the punching angles he could throw from.
My point is Sanchez got blindsided. By the time he realized what he was up against it could have been too late. It was just another defense for Sanchez, for Nelson it was the biggest moment of his life.
IMO Sanchez would have been more prepared in a rematch and won a bit easier.
