Actually Butch claims that after he stopped fighting he was able to get surgery on his knees. Apparantly after an arthroscopy they cleaned up the knee.

I never saw Spinks quoted saying it but Lewis claimed his knees were better then they were in his last few fights.

Defo did Charles...Pretty widely reported I thought. Remember he had one strapped up in a couple of his later fights?

Apparantly it was wear and tear from running on concrete with heavy boots or something. Pretty sure thats why he hardly fought in 1979, he had problems his whole career.

His knees were terrible in the end. It really affected his mobility.

I recall that he had given his money to Butch Lewis to set up in a trust that would last him forever. He was to receive a large stipend each month to live on but unfortunately Butch never transferred the trust over to Michael before he unexpectedly died and Michael’s money got absorbed into the Lewis estate and Michael lost most of his wealth. At least that is what I recall reading years back.

I remember reading that he contemplated moving down to the Cruiserweight division, but that there was no big money to be made there.

Bouts with Holyfield in 1989 and Holmes in 1991 were thisclose to happening, among others.

He might have won a couple of easy comeback fights but, by then Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield etc were all coming up.
    He'd have being crushed.

I’ve become friends with him and his girlfriend (basically his wife they’ve been together forever), he is indeed as humble and nice a guy as you could meet. Just no ego whatsoever. She believes he should have gone down to cruiser to win the title whereas he was very satisfied with his career and didn’t feel the need financially and competitively to go on. He was very content with his career. You’ll never hear him say “I was the best” “I’m the greatest light heavy” etc; it’s more “I did alright” or “I had a good career.” I will see him again soon and will definitely ask, or better still, I could post a thread for fans questions?

Re: the Butch Lewis money. Unfortunately, he had to go to court to recoup some of that and they settled. I’m not sure how much and wouldn’t want to speculate or wouldn’t ask but I’m guessing it’s a good chunk. He still lives in Delaware and he was able to keep the mansion and acres he bought way back. He still loves Butch and doesn’t have bad words to say about him. You can tell he genuinely loved him.

Something was mentioned back around 1990 but I think a lot of people were confusing him with Leon who actually DID come back around that time
