Was Fury a cherry pick gone wrong for Deontay Wilder?

At the time Fury was rusty over weight and battling with mental health issues. So did Wilder pick him to stack his resume without taking an actually risk?

    yes
    it was
& persons did everywhere claim Fury is looking only at it for a retirement cash

still also is was seen to be as bigger risk than most previous of Wilder fights . simple because Fury unpredictable & undefeated & Wilder most is taking on the bums

Yes. Wilder could have fought Joshua, but he chose Fury instead, as it was, in his mind, a lower risk way to add a big name to his pathetic resume to convince himself he's GOAT.

Wilder dared to challenge himself by taking on the man that dethroned Wladimir Klitschko

He gets too much disrespect in here. Yeah Fury destroyed him but Fury is one of the greatest to lace them. Theres no shame in losing to an ATG, but there is shame in losing to a fat mexican teletubby on 2 weeks notice

Yes. Fury came back after years of abusing his body and looked terrible and out of shape against bums and then all of a sudden was quickly booked into that fight out of nowhere. Not to mention he was viewed as pillow fisted and everyone kept bringing up the Cunningham knockdown ("if Wilder lands like that imagine what would happen" etc). Obviously the plan was for Wilder to highlight reel him and then walk around calling himself the real lineal champ and saying he beat the best British HW etc etc. It was supposed to be another chess move in the whole Wilder/AJ thing but they miscalculated.

Even with the second fight, while I wouldnt say it was a cherry pick anymore, I doubt Wilder and his people expected it to go like that. They were probably encouraged by the big knockdown at the end of the first fight and expected that they would get 12 rounds for Wilder to chase Fury down and look to land something big without having to worry about serious return fire. Remember the whole "he has to be perfect for 12 rounds" talk and lots of people saying Wilder just has to make a few adjustments etc. **** that fight was so satisfying...

Yes, it was a cherrypick. Fury was in horrible shape and needed more time to get ready. The cherrypick nearly worked too, a lot of referees would have waved it off, pro PBC referees certainly would have.

It was an obvious cherry pick. Where was Wilder after Fury beat Wlad? It was only after the extended time away from the ring, the massive weight gain and he looked less than impressive on his return that they started looking at Fury as an opponent.

Wilder fighting Fury was no different to when Iron Mike took on Holmes. Except Fury unlike Holmes was there to win and didn’t let inactivity and age stop him.

No, if he was cherry picking he wouldn't do a second time after getting away with a draw by the skin of his teeth. He could do the same as JCC did with Pernell but didn't

He cherrypicked by fighting still undefeated Fury? And then, he proceeded to fight him 2 more times? By no means am I a Wilder fan, but that is ridiculous.

Yes he caught Fury at the right time, but lacked the skills to do anything about it. His bank account loved the cherry pick so to Wilder it was definitely worth it!

    Ultimate cherry pick gone wrong..

I have to give credit to the referee though for allowing Fury to continue. So many refs would hsve jumped in and waved it off.
We have seen way weaker stoppages than this one would have been.
It turned into an epic rocky moment when he got up.
The face of deontay Wilder after that is exactly what David Goggins means by taking souls.

Wish Fury wasnt robbed though and then they still would have had the rematch.
Would have saved us the third fight and we could have had Fury vs AJ already.

The 1st fight was definitely cherry pick.

Fury had been out the game for a few years, was coming back from being grossly overweight and sniffing gear... didn't exactly set the world alight in his 2 comeback fights against inferior opposition......... yet he was undefeated, a name that could draw money and interest plust didn't lose the belts he won off Wlad inside the ring.

As far as Team Wilder were concerned, this fight had win win written all over it.

Wilder then got his head boxed off but landed that bomb in the 12th and Fury did his Undertaker routine........ the fight was a spectacle and a fight Wilder was lucky to get away with a draw.

Fans then bought into the rematch and the rest is history.
