Jose Pipino Cuevas vs Aaron The Hawk Pryor, at 147 lbs, Both Prime, 15 Rounds.

Pryor would eventually be hit with a good solid punch from Cuevas that I just can't see him getting up from. It's one thing to be hit clean with Arguello but against a much bigger puncher is just too much even for a warrior like Pryor.

 

Great post. Cervantes who was way past his best decked Pryor.
People forget- Cuevas actually BROKE bones when he hit people. Eye sockets. Jaws.
He would knock Pryor COLD at welterweight.

I just can't see Pryor staying down.

 

The issue I see with Pryor is he was small framed. Unlike Duran
who had thick legs and wide shoulders, which enabled him to
carry the extra weight successfully as he moved up, Pryor's
frame suggest he probably couldn't carry much extra weight
and be viable.
That's why he wouldn't have been successful at welter and
probably ko'ed by most of the better fighters in history at that weight.
Some have suggested on this site Ray Leonard was afraid of
him. Personally in my opinion he was very fortunate he didn't
get Leonard or Hearns in the ring with him.
Pryor could conceivably get off to a fast start against Cuevas
and be leading at the mid point of the fight. But he wasn't
defensively sound because he was so offensively oriented.
His tendency to attack with his chin up in the air would
eventually cost him.
One of those nuclear bombs of a left hook from Cuevas
would land true, and Pryor would violently learn the difference
between a natural lightweight and a big welter that punched like a middleweight
in the division.
Cuevas wins in 10-11 rds by spectacular ko in a fight of the year between
two seriously underestimated warriors.

 

Pryor is definitely going to crumble against a guy that's been known to break bones, eye sockets, dislocate jaws, and crack ribs. His come forward style is a no-no against a ferocious puncher like Cuevas. He doesn't have the height, reach, power like Hearns nor the defense and savviness of Duran to beat Cuevas.

 

Cuevas will probable almost kill Pryor

 

Cuevas gets way overlooked on this forum. Pryor gets too much respect on this forum. Cuevas mugs little Aaron like an upperclassman taking milk money from a frightened freshman. Too much size difference. Too much power for Cuevas.

 

Do Aaron’s chances improve much if given the black bottle with the special mix?

 

Pryor has the speed not to mention he was dynamic. Throwing punches from awkward angles. He knocked out everyone he fought basically. I don't understand why someone would dismiss hie power.

 

Cuevas is another forgotten greatly underrated former champion ... for a while in the late 70;'s her was an absolute monster blowing out tough guys .. then came Hearns , a terrifying bad match up and he was never the same .. that said this game is all about styles and Aaron would have been decapitated if he fought coming in fast and furious at Pipino who was naturally larger, stronger and a significantly bigger puncher at 147 .. if Aaron chose to box and puck his spots maybe but I don't like the match up for Aaron ..
