I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anyone asking this question.

he was dangling on the ropes maybe Marciano was trying to help knock him onto the canvas with the left so the count could start, that's crazy he was knocked out for a couple seconds before the count started while Rocky was getting sent back to his corner and was still out cold after the count, he wouldn't have even come close to making a full minute count

This is a very astute observation.

After the right hand, Walcott is left dangling on the ropes, the ropes being the only thing supporting him.

Note at that point also neither of Walcott’s knees or gloves are touching the canvas when Marciano hits Walcott high on the head with the left - and I agree, the intention of that punch was to put Walcott all the way down.

Even before Walcott contacts the canvas, first with the knee, then the glove, Marciano has already begun to walk away - the ref comes in, and as he does, Walcott’s knee contacts the canvas and the ref motions Rocky to a neutral corner - but Rocky had already begun heading off - he knew Walcott was done from the right, and most certainly so after the left.

Now the left wasn’t a mid stream punch that Rocky pulled up. Separate to the right, Rocky launched it while Walcott was dangling, not a full punch of course but it wasn’t glancing nor a mere love tap imo.

It hit an already “out” Walcott high on the head, and was enough to snap a loose necked Walcott’s head against his own left shoulder - and Walcott did slump after it, contacting the canvas shortly thereafter, with his knee first, then his glove.

So for the purpose of hastening Walcott’s descent, the left did do its intended job and Marciano knew it would, heading off even before the ref came in and before Walcott’s knee, then glove contacted the canvas.

So, was an unconscious Walcott dangling on the ropes (the only thing holding him up), head bowed, virtually genuflecting not sufficient cause to be deemed a knockdown back in the day? Of course now it would be.

Great call Marvelous Iron - Even though Marciano knew Walcott was OUT, I think that shot was intended to be enough to put Walcott all the way down for an unequivocal knock down and count.

Always nice to have the vision at our fingertips at any rate.

Sounds like another attempt to discredit Marciano. The people at ringside thought the right broke Walcotts neck the impact was so loud. The left didnt matter Walcott was out and not making the count, he threw everything he had at Rocky and knew he couldnt beat him as the rematch showed Walcott knew he wasnt beating the Rock.

Hey now. You'll have to convince me the Walcott wasn't acting. Just like he was acting in the Liston vs Ali II fight. By the way what's your opinion of the 2nd Marciano fight with Walcott? I think he wanted out and was acting. Old tricky Joe Walcott. I'm telling you the man could act.

The uppercut can be debated to be a glancing shot aswell since it is also indirect and from an angle but as we all know someone can easily be knocked out with an uppercut.

Not sure if he would have been able to recover in time from the right..maybe 10% chance.
You mentioned the left was technically a foul..do you think the left should have changed the outcome of the fight as far as the W for Rocky?

Just on my part, definitely not trying to discredit Rocky. Just calling the vision as I see it. In so far as securing the KO, it had already been achieved by the right, so the left wasn’t necessary - the focus being on exactly that - that it wasn’t necessary and whether the punch constituted a foul.

I scoured some contemporary newspaper reports and after the fight Walcott stated that Marciano was the dirtiest fighter he had ever faced - head butts, elbows etc. - but he didn’t mention the final left.

Unless he looked at the films, it’s obvious he wouldn’t remember it. LOL. For the rematch, fouls were very much a bone of contention - with the ref warning that if there were any he would automatically DQ the perpetrator - as we know there was little time allowed for any fouling in the rematch.

I’ll repeat my opinion. There’s no way Walcott was arising after the right hand.

The support of the ropes might’ve given some the illusory impression that Walcott was somehow in very small part conscious - but he was a dead man hanging.

The last left did not change the outcome in so far as Walcott was already out. Technically, if the unconscious Walcott hanging on the ropes = KD, then a foul could be interpreted.

Not as clean cut a foul as punching a fighter whose knee, gloves or body have contacted the canvas- with Walcott hanging on the ropes it came down to Rocky’s own judgment as to whether Jersey Joe was OUT with the ropes only holding him up.

I don’t know that the onus is on the fighter to make judgement on such technically deemed KDs - it’s up to the ref and if the ref hasn’t called a KD, then the fighter can’t be viewed as being in breach.

Not exactly the same but IIRC correctly, though Max Schmeling wasn’t out, he was def. hanging on the ropes for support when Louis was teeing off - so no reason/obligation for Joe to stop punching until Max goes down or the ref intervenes. Max accused Louis of illegal kidney shots - but it was Max who was turning away from
the punches, giving rise to shots landing in that area.

Your thoughts in paragraph 4 I totally agree with. As far as Rocky was concerned it was fair game. No part of Walcott's body touched the canvas.
Thanks for replying, I didn't realize I was asking the same question.

First fight? A damn fine piece of acting on Joe’s part if that’s what it is. Better than Brando. A stellar performance (Stella!?). He really immersed himself in the role of a dead man.

Rematch? Joe more or less took the money and ran imo. It looked like Marciano’s last left in the first fight had more meat on contact than the uppercut in the rematch. Ha!

Interesting that even for those who believe Jersey Joe basically said screw it after being KD’d in the rematch - they’re less critical re that decision as compared to believing same of someone like Liston.

So many similarities between the two rematches, phantom punches, count controversies (at least Walcott got one - he didn’t pay it forward though), their advanced ages - Walcott was like 39 yo and Liston about 137 yo at last count. And of course, there was Jersey Joe’s conspicuous presence in both fights.

It’s bemusing that the sport of boxing sometimes doesn’t garner the respect that it craves. Hehe.
