I can't stand grunters. I put money on Benavidez only to instantly remember he was a grunter. Every punch accented by a "humpf"... Morrison has to be my least favorite of this bunch. Botha was one also. Who am I missing?
You know, IIRC Moorer pulled that same routine versus Foreman. He would go "pop, pop, pop!" while outboxing Big George and comfortably coasting to a points victory That didn't end well... This content is protected
Joe Frazier was very vocal. In particular the Thrilla in Manila he can be heard loudly grunting as he dug body shots into Ali along the ropes. Another guy I remember seeing live that was load was Jean Mark Mormeck. I was ringside when he beat the **** out a dude on the Spinks vs Karmazin undercard. Mormeck was loudly grunting.
Some are louder than others, but most grunt at some point when punching. Some start off just exhaling air from either their nose or mouth, especially from outside, but eventually almost all grunt, particularly when working on the inside. Grunting on the inside is probably an unconscious defense mechanism to keep more air in the body - in case of a return body shot. I hadn't really thought about grunting before, but a person usually takes a body shot much better if he has a lot of air in his body. We had a guy one day who was in a "zone." He got 3 knockdowns while sparring against 3 different sparring partners by watching their breathing. He would hit them to the body when they expelled their air. Apparently it took a lot of concentration because he hasn't been able to duplicate it since.
That would infuriate me to a new level. I’d get vocal and most likely have my head spun like Emily Rose.
Interesting. I don’t know why but this reminded me of how Floyd Patterson would stare at someone’s chest to help predict the punch.
To be honest I would grunt a little when I got tired. I actually sparred with a guy who grunted a split second before he threw a punch. I thought it was a joke or a trap but he did it and was obviously easy to figure. But I'm talking about the loud grunters, the 100 decibel types, not the between the teeth sort
