1971 Joe Frazier was no joke, he fought like he was on a mission and not of peace. 1982 Larry Holmes was great, he had that head snapping left jab, movement. He had defeated the Geriatric abuser Gerry Cooney and future film star Randall Tex Cobb in 1982. As champion, Holmes had been decked by Earnie Shavers in Sept 1979 and Renaldo Snipes in Nov 1981. Holmes may keep Joe away with that jab, but Frazier might target where Larry lives, the body which could immobilize the footwork and stamina. Then there is the question, can Larry take Frazier's sledgehammer left hook without tasting the canvas. Both are prideful champions but Joe scored a fair and square victory over another similar boxer on March 8 1971, challenger Muhammad Ali, who had fought 18 rounds in 43 months. Joe will smoke for 15 rounds to take a very hard earned victory over Larry by decision.
OK I still don't agree think this would be an obstacle in Frazier's path but your post now makes a lot more sense given the context.
I tend to favor Frazier over Holmes in a prime head to head. I do wonder though whether Holmes would be able to factor in his uppercuts? Futch said Ali's lack of a close in uppercut was something Frazier exploited (though Ali did land a pretty crisp uppercut on Joe early in Manilla).
Joe is gonna be blind from Larry’s jab. Plus he will be tagging Joe with that right. Joe can not hurt Larry. Ok maybe if he hits him with a baseball bat lol….. Joe did not have the power to hurt Larry. This is such a easy fight for Larry. Who did Joe really beat????? Ali? That wasn’t in shape etc… in the FOTC??? That was not a good version of Ali. Mathis? Quarry? Foster? I really don’t see anything on Joe’s resume that suggests he could beat Larry or a 1991 version of Foreman either! Poor Joe
I'm an Ali fan boy! Yes, everyone reading this familiar with my posts knows I am an Ali freak. Your being laughed at.
Buster Mathis was 6-4 240 in his fight with Frazier. While not a great heavyweight he had agility and quickness for a man his size. He put Frazier's chin on trial in 1968. Joe Bugner was 6-4 220lbs. Ali hit harder than Holmes. He hit Joe with everything but the kitchen sink.. If Ali was off his best in the FOTC it wasn't by much. I didn't hear anyone saying Ali looked rusty those first 5 rounds when he was sharpshooting at Frazier's head. It was Joe Frazier's insane chin and uncommon determination that got him through. Larry Holmes wished he was so rusty.
