What did you think of Cotto's low blow, when Judah had him hurt with the uppercut. It had the same feel of when Trinidad did it to Vargas in round 4 of their fight.

    Bruce Seldon (35-4 31 KOs)vs Gerald Nobles (22-0 17 KOs)

The date is 5/15/2004 the undercard of Jones vs Tarver 2 I believe. Seldon has come out of an 8 year retirement after his embarrassment vs Tyson in 96 where he was KOd in 1 and lost his WBA Heavy title. He fought 2 journeymen leading into this fight months apart. Nobles is 33 and his career has been trudging along, his only notable win also 8 years ago KOing Maurice Harris

    Round 1 10-9 Nobles
    Round 2 10-8 Seldon
    Round 3 10-9 Nobles
    Round 4 10-9 Nobles
    Round 5 10-9 Nobles
    Round 6 10-9 Seldon
    Round 7 10-9 Seldon
    Round 8 10-9 Nobles
Round 9 Nobles drops Seldon with a shot to the eye and Bruce elects to take the 10 count

Scoring at the time of the stoppage 76-75 Nobles

Seldon about 20 lbs north of his best weight looks like an aged bodybuilder who let himself go a bit. Pretty decent slugfest, not great, but Seldon looked like he wanted to atone for the Tyson debacle. Nobles is pretty wild with haymakers most of the fight and outworks Seldon but Seldom drops Nobles with a counter hook in round 2 and makes a nice little combeack in the middle rounds. Gone is Seldons main weapon, the jab, as he spends most of the fight switching stances and trading bombs with Nobles. A left hand to Seldons eye ends things

I didn't really see it the same way. As memory serves me Trinidad nailed Vargas in the cojones fairly immediate after getting dropped. A clear sign he was rolling the dice on time to recover. However, Zab had only stunned Cotto momentarily with about 20 seconds to go in the 2nd round and Cotto was back on the attack before the round was over. Whatever cobwebs there were, he had already shook them loose. It wasn't until halfway through the 3rd round he caught Zab with the low blow and he had things his own way up until then, so I can't say it was the same. I must say though, upon rewatching that sequence, I had to laugh when the ref came over to Zab saying something after the low blow and Zab practically screamed, "Man, he hit me in my d*ck!"

Henry Tillman v Bert Cooper (NABF cruiserweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Cooper
    Round 2: 10-7 Cooper (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 3: 10-9 Cooper
    Round 4: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 5: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 6: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 7: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 8: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 9: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 10: 10-9 Cooper
    Round 11: 10-9 Cooper
    Round 12: 10-10 Even

Total: 114-113 Cooper (actual scores: 114-113, 115-112 and 115-113 all for Cooper)

This fight had its moments of melodrama, but it was not the war that the announcers would have you believe. It started out crazy but then Cooper was gassed by the 4th round, which let Tillman back into the fight. And he took full advantage of Cooper's fatigue. But really Tillman just didn't have the kind of punch that was going to do anything to Bert. Just a lot of big pokes from Henry. Bert got a bit of a second wind late but was spent again by the 12th along with Tillman. You guys can watch it but be warned that it gets sloppy.

Leon Spinks D10 Eddie "El Animal" Lopez

Thanks to @AwardedSteak863 for the reminder about this one, it was quite fun. I had it as close as a decision can be and still be awarded to someone, Spinks by a single point. Lopez did well to often pin Spinks on the ropes and whale away, great battle plan. Problem is, Spinks was ripping sharp counters through Lopez' porous guard the whole time, usually with jolting effect. So much so, in fact, that I awarded a couple such rounds to Spinks even though he was in a defensive stance for much of a given round. His counters were just so sharp and accurate.

I had it dead even after nine, and it's a tribute to Spinks' guts and drive that he took the needed last round, much as he rallied late against Burnett. Good fight.

    1. Spinks
    2. Spinks
    3. Lopez
    4. Lopez
    5. Spinks
    6. Spinks
    7. Even
    8. Lopez
    9. Lopez
    10. Spinks

    96-95 Spinks.

Glad you enjoyed it. I actually had it for Lopez by a point. Both guys were absolute warriors that had issues outside of the ring with substance abuse. They are no longer with us but they left their mark on this world as long as there are people like us that care enough to watch their life's work. Long live Leon and Lopez!

Evander Holyfield v Henry Tillman (cruiserweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Tillman
    Round 2: 10-8 Holyfield (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 4: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 5: 10-8 Holyfield (administers a battering)
    Round 6: 10-9 Holyfield
Round 7: Holyfield drops Tillman 3 times for a stoppage

Total through 6 completed rounds: 59-53 Holyfield (actual scores: 59-54, 60-53 and another 60-53 all for Holyfield)

I actually have this on VHS somewhere. It was really hyped at the time. Two of the Olympic gold medalists from '84 meeting for a world title at cruiser and both friends. It had all the earmarks of a great encounter, except it wasn't. Holyfield methodically dismantled Tillman before administering the finishing touches in the 7th.

Roman Martinez v Orlando Salido 1

Tremendous fight from start to finish.

Salido lost this convincingly on the official cards but I had this closer and had he managed to stay on his feet and not lose the point deduction, he’d have won - on my card, anyway. But I had zero problem with the result. Martinez fought a smart and gutsy fight and deserved the victory overall.

Part of Salido’s problem was that he had to find a way inside as he was being tagged by Martinez’s combos on the outside. And in trying to do so he raised the ire of the ref, who warned him for low blows repeatedly in the early going. I wasn’t convinced that he was going illegally low and the point deduction in the 11th looked like it came from a body shot, although it was hard to tell from the camera angle.

Regardless, both fighters went for broke in numerous rounds, taking turns battering each other and it was great to watch.

I’m still looking for a full version of the rematch so if anyone has a link, please share.

    1 10-9
    2 9-10 (close. Madness)
3 10-8 (Salido wobbled halfway through the round and then dropped later)
    4 9-10
5 10-8 (Salido goes down as a delayed reaction to being hurt from an earlier flurry from Martinez in a round he was ahead in)
    6 9-10
    7 9-10
    8 10-9
9 10-9 (close. Back and forth action)
    10 9-10
11 9-9 (Salido had already received multiple warnings for low blows but not sure if he really went low here. Fought back well to take a share of the round and keep things up for grabs)
    12 9-10

    Martinez 113-112 Salido

Just watched this based on your write up very good fight, i thought it was a bit wider than you though mate.

Roman Martinez vs Orlando Salido 1

    1 Martinez
    2 Salido
    3 Martinez 10-8 knockdown
    4 Martinez
    5 Martinez 10-8 knockdown
    6 Martinez
    7 Salido
    8 Martinez
    9 Salido
    10 Salido
11 Point deduction for Salido 9-9
    12 Salido

    114-111 Martinez

For me Martinez did enough in the first 8 rounds to pull it out with the 2 knockdowns, despite Salido piling on alot of pressure. I felt like Martinez used the ring well boxed nicely on the outside with combinations despite few rough moments.

The fight turned around out after the 8th round, as Salido's aggression was more effective as he was able to get closer to Martinez and smother him. I thought the point deduction in the 11th round was fair, Salido had landed a fair number of low blows throughout the fight, and had been warned multiple times so he can have no complaints.

Overall a very good fight Orlando Salido has been in many wars, but for me he left it a little bit too late in this fight. And i feel like Martinez deserved the win based on the two knockdowns, and his boxing skills and ring generalship using the ring very nicely in the first 8 rounds.

I completely agree about Martinez’s ring generalship - he boxed very well, controlled the distance well over the first half of the fight and clearly did enough to take the win, particularly with the KDs. No complaints about the result or your score, D.

Marciano vs Moore 1955 Bronx NY heavyweight title fight

    1. 10-10
    2. 10-9 Moore
    3. 10-9 Marciano
    4. 10-9 Marciano, Moore tried to come on but it was minuscule spent the majority of the round on the ropes
    5. 10-9 Marciano, but closer than 4
    6. 10-7 Marciano
    7. 10-8 Marciano
    8. 10-8 Marciano, Moore made a frail attempt to come on in the first half of the round, too little too late he is done, dipping his toes into unnecessary brain damage
    9. KO Marciano

Moore scores a knockdown in the second and only gets an even round?

Not to drive home the point too far, but why would Marciano get the benefit of 10-7 and 10-8 rounds in which he had a knockdown but Moore doesn't?

10-7 Marciano had two knockdowns, and besides the knockdown(s) he also dominated the rounds/pressed the action, removing the knockdown it was 10-9 Marciano, add a knockdown 10-8, another knockdown 10-7

Rocky came on like a storm trying to finish Archie after the first knockdown in round 6, throughout the fight it seemed like Archie was just trying to survive and not trying to win, he would come on a little and actually landed some good shots at times but then wouldn't keep it going
