I’ve heard loads of fighters saying it’s their dream to win the title but what does the British title even mean? It doesn’t mean you the best fighter in Britain by any means. In boxing the world titles are the ones people dream of. I don’t even know half of the British champions I think Joe Joyce is one but it does it really matter?
It should matter but the likes of Conor Benn would rather go after a WBO Inter-Continental Belt against an absolute nobody or washed up guy than fight a decent Brit for the Lonsdale one. In summary, fighting for the British title represents a risk which a lot of fighters and promoters aren't prepared to take if they think they can wait it out and cash out an 0 later down the line.
It's a stepping stone towards Commonwealth, European and World. Doesn't mean much but it's an achievement nonetheless.
It’s above the commonwealth title… It’s still a prestigious belt due to the history, as said above, it’s been diminished slightly by fighters bypassing it as they don’t want to risk their 0. There have still been some excellent British champions in recent years and some excellent scraps. If I was a boxer I’d rather win the British outright than the European.
For me a low point in recent years was Sem Sexton beating Gary Cornish for it in 2017, only to then surrender it via KO against Hughie Fury who then dropped it rather than face the likes of Dubois, Joyce or Allen. As for the Commonwealth, watching Dave Allen struggle to a points defeat against Lenroy Thomas and then seeing Joyce casually obliterate Thomas in two rounds was quite funny but highlighted how easy a belt it is to obtain.
Of course it matters 99.9% of boxers never win a genuine world title. There are many boxers whose greatest achievement is winning the British title. If you disagree then you are just viewing it through the lens of a hyped prospect. Winning some world trinket belt only means something if it actually leads to you winning a genuine world title. Again, 99% of the time it doesn’t.
It should definitely mean something, although probably meant more historically. When there were nowhere near the amount of belts as there are now, it was easier to follow.......Area, British, Commonwealth/European, then a World title. Also winning a Lonsdale belt was a huge achievement & a beautiful belt too. Today, l have no idea what half of the belts are or mean. Probably says more about my age though !
I think it means a lot. I would have more respect for a British champion than a wbo intercontinental champion. The problem is the rankings. Wbo will use the minor belts to rank fighters.
gone educate yourself what it means to earn the lonsdale challenge belt oh dear oh dear it carries more history than all the alphabet belts combined it came about through the earl pitting his chef against his servant iirc
The heck are you on about man. How does it carry more history than the actually world titles. The British champion isn’t even the best champion in Britain whilst the world champion is the best on the world.
its way above the commonwealth no one cares about the commonwealth these days, anyone can get a shot at that.
