You're right. But Briggs was never that good to begin with.

 

I reckon that's about right,mate. If Bowe had fulfilled his potential he'd have been right up there with Lennox.

 

It's a shame that we couldn't have had Bowe around, in good health of course, for a lot more years, Stevie.
Perhaps having clashes with Lewis, Foreman, Tyson, Mercer.
Any of those would have been great, adding to that fantastic era for the big lads.
But that skill was there, mate, it was on show for a few years.

These lists make the 90s seem a bit overrated and very top heavy. The 80s was a better era imo.

Seldon is better than Briggs. It's close but we could dissect it if you like? Seldon fought higher ranked fighters and never got KO'd in 3 to someone named Darroll Wilson.

Seldon beat some past it name fighters to boost his confidence (Ossie Ocasio, David Bey and Jose Ribalta) on his path to getting ranked (Something Foreman did in his comeback). Took 2 consecutive losses, an upset to Olive McCall in a match Seldon was up 8 rounds to 0, and the KO 1 loss to Bowe. Then he rebounded and beat Jesse Ferguson in the same year Ferguson beat Mercer to get a crack at Bowe's titles.

Took another loss, this time to Tony Tubbs a year after Tubbs gave Bowe a scare. Then beat Greg Page to get a shot at Foreman's former belt against Tucker. Beats Tony Tucker and Joe Hipp consecutively. Not the greatest resume but better than Shannon Briggs.

Briggs fought no one of note and padded his record to fighters with losing records, even getting KO'd to Wilson, before facing Foreman. Then the loss to Lewis in a barnburner (I was screaming at Briggs to finish Lennox off in that 1st round). Then the draw to Botha in a fight Briggs had all but won, where if Briggs didn't score a knockdown he loses. Then the abysmal loss to Sedrick Fields. Another loss to Jameel McCline. Then a win, a last second KO over Sergei Liakhovic that saw him win the WBO belt. A belt in which he lost in his very first defense to Sultan Ibragimov.

Should I go on?

Briggs lost to anyone who was any good. Except the last second KO over Liakhovic. And he lost to a few who were no good at all.

Briggs had the look of a heavyweight champion. And he did give Lennox one helluva scare!

 

I agree. From top to bottom the 80's heavies were stacked with talent. Don King screwed it up.

 

So many potential mega fights in the 90's that we missed out on.
