Mugabi gave Hagler far more hell than Hearns did. Thoughts.

I guess you can argue that Hagler was more in danger of losing the Hearns fight because of the cut, but Hagler was definitely handling Hearns from round 2 on. Hearns was trying to box and use movement, but Hagler kept getting to him.

I thought Hagler was generally in control of the Mugabi fight, he was jabbing the **** out of him, but taking some hard shots too. It was physically more grueling on Hagler, he was urinating blood afterwards.

Even though he wasn't prime when he fought Tommy, Hagler was much further past it against Mugabi than he was against Hearns.

I agree. Mugabi had to be beaten for 10 rounds before he would even back up. Much better fight in every way.

No doubt about it. Near identical versions too, folks act like Marv was at his best for Hearns and ancient for John which is just weird.

John actually I reckon hurt Marv quite a bit more then anyone @greynotsoold had a post about the little things Hagler was doing differently like looping his rear hand to avoid return fire and stuff to that effect (check me on it) and I rewatched it looking for other signs that I wasn’t clever enough to spot…

Really good fight and awesome showing by Mugabai who went on to have an honest go of the business. At the end of the line Marvin was more impressive then any 160lbs fighter in recent memory has ever been.

Yes he did after Mugabi, Hagler was spent, urinating blood. SRL got him at the right time.

And I also give Mugabi credit because he was fighting not only at 160, but 154, before taking on Hagler.

That body beating softened him up for Leonard, and Leonard hit Hagler hard to the body in their fight. Some of those shots Hagler took were thudding.

For me the Mugabi fight was much more entertaining

One thing that kind of irritates me is that people like to discredit the win because Mugabi moved up from 154. But I'm sure that Hagler would attest that he was one of the strongest fighters that he faced. Actually later on he said that Mugabi felt like a light heavyweight when they fought.

Both fights are overrated for me, Hearns vs Hagler had 1 great round then the rest was all Hagler. And Hagler vs Mugabi was mostly one sided, although probably watching them live was a different matter. I much preferred Kelly Pavlik vs Jermain Taylor 1.

Although to answer your question, Hagler vs Mugabi is a better fight for me over Hagler vs Hearns. Round 6 is very exciting and some of the early rounds Mugabi had few good moments, but I don't rate it as highly as alot of fans do.

PS - forget what I just said about Hagler vs Mugabi, I just watched highlights again to refresh my memory. Much better fight than I remember, I thought it was more one sided, it was indeed a great fight my memory played tricks on me.

People tend to forget that Hearns broke his right hand in the first round. I think the fight would have been more interesting had that not happened.

Hahaha. Glad that you revisited it. Watch the entire fight whenever you have the time and I think that you will absolutely agree that it was one of Hagler's most grueling fights and far from overrated.

I texted this very thought to a friend a couple weeks back as I was rewatching it.

As pointed out above, after the first round against Hearns, Hagler was just rolling downhill. Contrary, I felt like Mugabi was still dangerous almost to the very end.
