Great video Rummy. Michael Spinks is arguably the greatest 175 pound fighter since Ezzard Charles, the guy was a monster and was close to unbeatable at that weight. The fact that he moved up and was the guy to hand Holmes his first defeat it already astonishing. It's a shame how he's mostly remembered for being KO'd by Tyson in one round.
Awesome vid thank you Rummy! I agree 100% with every point you made, from Spinks' high place in the pantheon of LH greats, to his unique & effective rhythm against Holmes, to having Holmes a close winner in in #2 & everything else. Funny, but a few days ago I was thinking of posting a topic on whether HWs get enough credit when they beat LH greats. We see other division champs getting their due respect when a lower-weight dynamo moves up and gets spanked, ala Sanchez - Gomez, for a classic example. Do you guys think Tunney would be Dempsey's best win, if he obliterated him in 1 round? I'm not a huge Tyson fan, but he really does not get enough credit for the Spinks annihilation (which I consider his best win), nor for the Holmes win.
I sent this to Mikes wife and she loved it. Will make sure the champ sees it too. He’s very modest and usually takes any praise with a comment like “I was alright. I did well.”
Cheers, Chris! Thank you. I wasn't sure when the photo was taken, but I do believe it was featured in an 8x10 which noted him as "Heavyweight Champion of the World". Thanks for clarifying. Not surprising that they used an image from an earlier shoot for that.
Love Spinks. I remember reading when they asked him how he beat Holmes, he said he wasn't really sure and that had had an "athletic fit," which I interpret as meaning that he used a lot of unorthodox moments that were hard to read, or something. Regardless, it worked. It is worth nothing that when he fought Tyson, not only was he 33, but his knees were totally shot. He was no longer capable of the great movement, or even proper training. Not taking anything away from Tyson, but there it is. Shame we couldn't have got him in there with the third Muhammed, Matthew Saad Muhammed, but I guess after the Qawi fight he never quite was the same. Still, it would have been fun. Saad was such. crowd-pleaser.
