He only ever held the wbog title and didn't ko many if any of note, but he had raw power. Where do you personally place him at lightheavy? Could he fit in with any good era and make his mark?
I rate him nowhere. Guys like Julio Cesar Gonzalez and Tavoris Cloud got more done. I think he might do better than Jean Pascal but wouldn’t be consistent enough to match Stevenson or Kovalev.
His head to head abilities at 175 are probably better than his resume reflects on paper. But he doesn’t have the sort of wins needed to gain any historic rating at light heavy. If he had fought and beaten someone like Virgil Hill we’d have a bit more to work with
Moorer's best win at Light Heavyweight was against a faded Leslie Stewart, and Moorer struggled in that fight. Which to me shows he's kind of overrated at Light Heavyweight. His short time at Light Heavyweight was against uninspiring opponents, and he didn't fight any of the other rival belt holders. He also came along at the time when the division was kind of mehh, especially compared to how strong the division was not long before that with Qawi, Muhammad, Johnson, Lopez, Conteh, etc. Had Moorer fought Prince Charles Williams, Virgil Hill, and beaten them. We would of found out alot more about him. But overall i'd say he was a solid hard hitting exciting Light Heavyweight, but no i don't think he makes his mark in the best Light Heavyweight eras.
I’d rate him at about 206 pounds. He was one of the early wave of incredible shrinking men who cut enormous weight and never scaled at 175 except for that brief moment when they weighed in for each fight. But his resume there is hardly noteworthy. Too bad he didn’t end up fighting any of the true top fighters of his day in that class. There were in his 3-year WBO title span a few guys it would have been interesting to see him step up against, chiefly Virgil Hill. Charles Williams and Jeff Harding. Would like to have seen him try to take their measure.
Would love to see him v Charles Williams and Harding! Those could have been brutal. Thing is, Moorer never really got seriously tested at that weight. He just bombed em out. The guys mentioned above won't go to easily at all.

Tough to accurately rate him there because he didn't get to fight Hill, Maske or Williams but I really think he would have beaten those guys but we will never know for sure. Out of the Light-Heavyweights that moved up and won the heavyweight title, I believe he was the most legit at heavyweight. Tunney didn't beat a man over 200 pounds, RJJ only beat Ruiz, Spinks beat Holmes and Cooney but Moorer fought at heavyweight for over ten years beating guys like Holyfield, Schulz, Botha, Stewart, Cooper, Jirov etc. I really do think he would trouble anyone that ever fought at 175 but again, he never cleaned out the division so it is tough to be able to back that statement.
I rate him like a competent HW who beat up on 175lbers and did what was expected, look silly on occasion and brutally KO them.
That's one thing that makes him stand out from most lightheavy s, he actually captured the big boys title. Yes, it was from a crap lookin Holyfield, but still, its an achievement.
Exactly. I also take note of the longevity he had at heavyweight. He won the title from Holyfield in 94' and a full decade later knocked out a very tough Vassily Jirov. The same Jirov that took Toney life and death two years earlier and ended Joe Messi's career. Moorer always took on tough guys at heavyweight. He did not cherry pick a past his prime Cooney like Spinks did or a slow John Ruiz like RJJ did. He fought top ten guys that all had different and difficult styles. Stewart, Cooper, Schulz, Botha, Jirov were all dangerous guys when he fought them. His losses to Tua, Foreman and Holyfield are hardly anything to sneeze at.

I doubt he is more than arounds 182 on light heavy fight. 185 top maximums estimated. probable less
Truth be told, I am really partial to Moorer because I saw him fight live a few times when he was an amateur and I first started boxing myself. He was an absolute killer. Looking at what he did at heavyweight, I just don't see how the 175 pounders of his day like Hill or Jeff Harding would have beaten him. From what I have read, there was no way any of those guys were going to fight him so he had to move up. Hearns was still around but no way Manny Stewart would let those two fight. He managed both and knew that MM would have killed Tommy.
is true there was the feel if Moorer could gets those establish world belt holder boxers WBA IBF WBC in the ring light heavyweight he would favour to clean. this is the hype of times . not provens of the course. but his performance at heavyweight for first few years make it seem look valid that he is avoided in light heavy & was live up to hypes
