I remember listening to Muhammad Ali vs Jerry Quarry 1 on the local radio station, it was televised on Closed Circuit Television on Oct 26 1970.

Rich - you have a lot of great real time boxing memories.

In lieu of vision it would’ve been fun to listen to the fights on the radio.

If I can’t see a fight I’m interested in real time, I opt for online round by round.

Of course it depends on who’s doing it but they can be fun to read in their own right.

Sometimes when there’s a long delay in the next round update it makes you wonder if something dramatic has gone down (like a KD or KO) requiring more time and care in the reporting.

It’s a 50/50 proposition - sometimes something big has happened, other times its just a slow update for no good reason. LOL.

No way could Jerry Quarry go fifteen rounds with any version of Ali prior to 1976/1977.

Step aside Murrieta, I was there 6 years earlier with Clay/Liston, huddled around a small brown radio in my mum and dads cramped 3 roomed council flat, complete with outside toilet and wash room, gas light in the middle of the ceiling, tin bath doubling up as table, lino on the floor, an old heavy iron that my mum heated up on the open gas stove, small ( and I mean small ) black and white tele in the corner of the tiny front room, after the broadcast me and my brother, went back to our bunk beds, till it was time to get up for school, happy days;).
stay safe guys. nice post Rich.

    Great post Mike!

Reminds me of a quote I once read.

A childhood friend of Sean Connery said: “Until we were told we were impoverished, we were happy as pigs in sh*t.” I love that quote and often, it is the truth.

The parents often bare the brunt of lack of finances while self sacrificing for their kids.

I came from a big family. Catholics, no condoms, just the rhythm method as piously pontificated by Pope whoever.

Every sperm is sacred, right? I used to joke with my mum and say “Well, Catholics obviously don’t have much rhythm, do they?

As the youngest I was often happily told that I wasn’t “planned”, rather, I was an “accident”. Warm and fuzzy memories.

Also, when Mum and Dad waxed lyrical about when my older siblings took their first steps or spoke their first words etc. I would pipe in and ask excitedly “What about me?”.

“Can’t remember” was always the simple and flat reply. By the time of the fifth child (yours truly) it all gets a bit boring and stale.
They somehow missed the fact that I was a child prodigy.

At meal times, for convenience and economical purposes - chips and scallops were often the order of the day.

Though it was, however, still survival of the fittest and survival of those blessed with the highest pain thresholds.

Lest we miss out, my siblings and I would shovel as much, still piping hot, food into our mouths as we could - and it burnt like hell! LOL.

Thanks for reading. Getting all this out there has been very cathartic. I speak in truth/jest and I dearly miss my Mum and Dad. Great parents.
