Come off Azuhmas Rod you tosser. What happened when it mattered most was your “boy” hid his mouth piece and lied through his teeth about being sick. He got utterly dominated by a past it Fenech. Nothing will change that. “B-but Malaria” if it was he wouldn’t be in the ring going 12 hard rounds do you know what it does to a man??? Fenech was shot in the second fight Azuhma was training his heart out, that’s the difference if you can’t see it you’re a fool. Final Hurrah of a great fighter vulture pickings for the overrated Nelson just like with the great Martinez.

Seems like you’re the one overly attached to a fighter in this discussion, what with repeated references to something about a mouthpiece (what does that have to do with anything exactly?) and such.

Fenech went from career-best performance vs. a weakened opponent to fighting again three months later and then fighting the rematch six months after this. Yet supposedly he was a shell of himself? C’mon man, fighters don’t drop off a ledge like that in that short of a span.

Jeff was a prime 27 years old. Azumah was an aging 33.

I’m sure Nelson trained hard for the rematch, just as I’m sure Fenech trained for the fight. That’s what fighters do. The only difference is Nelson was at full strength the second time around and Jeff found out that he was just a hyped-up pressure fighter of no special skill or ability when facing a true world-class opponent who isn’t ill with malaria.

You should also do some research about malaria. One can contract it yet not have it show up for up to four weeks and not feel any symptoms, but their red blood cell count is lowering and they are weakening. In fact, in some cases people don’t feel ill until a year later. It’s not like you get bit by a mosquito and fall into convulsions. People can have it and still function. Nelson obviously didn’t know he had it until tests after the fight.

Back to the fight(s): tell me which it is — was Fenech completely shot or was he hung over from partying? And when did he start partying exactly? Had he partied between fights before or not? If so, what’s different about this (other than he lost)?

You can contact boxrec and ask them to put an asterisk (*has good excuse) if it makes you feel better about the result. But you can’t get away from the fact that Azumah knocked Fenech out.

Here you can look at it for yourself.

If you’ve watched the first fight you’d see Nelson’s team stalling over a mouth piece. It happens take Benitez after Duran he was not the same. The Im sick excuse has showed up plenty and multiple times from Nelson. If you don’t think the life style a boxer has impacts performance you need to read up.

I haven’t seen the first fight in years. I don’t remember anything about a mouthpiece but I’ll take your word for it. Exactly what did that have to do with the second fight? Or the outcome of the first — Fenech was clearly robbed to end up with a draw instead of a W.

I don’t know anything about any other excuses by Nelson other than having malaria for the first fight — you say on the one hand you don’t like excuses and then you make excuse after excuse for Fenech for losing the rematch.

He wasn’t the same fighter the second time around because he was up against a full-strength opponent who he couldn’t bully around. Azumah went to the ropes a few times but his back was to the ropes when he put Fenech down (just before the stoppage). Jeff got tagged early and was tamed — he wasn’t as frisky to try to force Nelson to the ropes because he tasted the power and didn’t want to walk into more.

Let’s be civil. We can discuss fights and disagree but the name-calling from you before is beneath you.

Sorry you're right, Aussie pride. Honestly don't listen to me about Fenech, but anyways in the first fight Nelsons team stalled for time because they lost the mouth piece, I think it was because Nelson couldn't handle the pace. The second fight I just don't think Fenech was on form, now how about this what if both excuses are valid to a degree, It's possible Fenech was shot and wasted himself with stuff outside the ring and Azuhma had a bug. Neither is impossible or truly out of the realm of reason.

We’re good. We disagree on this topic but I value you as a poster here and appreciate your contributions.

We’ll never know who was where on their full-strength meter going into both fights. I think we can see Azumah is clearly stronger in the second fight and I think we can see Fenech was at full confidence and powers in the first.

My opinion, which is worth what you’re paying for it (nothing) is that the early knockdowns (the second could have been ruled a slip but he had been tagged with a right immediately before it and there was a punch that seemed to land on Fenech’s neck so there was a punch) forced Fenech to be more cautious in his approach — he had only been down once before, early in his career I think — and less willing to barge in as usual.

Thank you Pat. The feeling is likewise, it’s all possible. This is one of those tip the hat debates, you could bewrong, right or somewhere in between and so could I, my insults and certainty wasn’t warranted at all.

Yes Ray won, but he was bigger and had a longer reach and stayed mainly on the outside, Ray was always super fast and won that fight with footspeed and an active guard, it was a good performance v a smaller fighter.

Yes Nelson simply overpowered Fenech, Jeff looked good in their first fight but Nelson wa more aggressive in the rematch and I don`t think Fenech could take a solid featherweight shot very well.

I never rated Rossi but Curry looked quick at 154 and yes Nunn`s victory over Tate is wildly overrated, his win over a smaller faded Curry wasn`t very good either.

Fenech was past his prime weight, he still had great hand speed but despite hurting Nelson the bigger fighter ate his shots better than bantams did and Fenech couldn`t take Nelson`s best shots, in the first fight Fenech pinned Nelson in a corner stopping him from getting his whole weight into shots, no bantamweight ever hit as hard as Nelson except Oliveres who punched far harder than Fenech did.

Overrated - Victor Rabanales KO8 Rafael Marquez - on paper this looks like a fantastic win for Rabanales. But in actuality, this was Marquez' pro debut while Rabanales was engaging in his 56th pro bout. I read that Marquez claimed he thought it was an exhibition, but how many exhibitions are scheduled for this distance? In all likelihood, the Marquez camp probably thought they could jump right into the fray against the older Rabanales and take advantage of his defensive liabilities and his lofty world rating.

Underrated - Benny Lynch KO13 Peter Kane - this fight has always interested me. An absolute outstanding challenger who would later go on to gain world honors himself, against an outstanding world champ, who was slowly dissipating before the eyes of the world. I once read former fighter and noted actor Victor McLaglen emerged from the football grounds where the fight was staged, shaking his head and telling reporters that "That was 13 rounds of the finest boxing I have ever seen." What was even more amazing was that almost exactly a year later Lynch was retired at 25, a washed up alcoholic. A truly pronounced downfall from the first Kane fight, where his inner demons had obviously already gained a good foothold.
