This does kind of seem like an excuse, from a sore loser who couldn't handle being swept off the canvas like a splattered fly from a windshield.
This quote is in the documentary The Kings. Duran also talks about spending a week in a hotel room having threesomes with 2 girls he met a a club and how they were 69ing. In regards to Duran’s excuses, Steve Farhood talks about how it’s a common thing, fighters always have excuses. He brings up the great excuse from Anthony Hembrick claiming his Jheri curl seaped into his brain.
This fight always annoys me with people and shows us a few types. Duran got tagged, he got bombed out when he was hurt. It’s just part of the game it doesn’t tell us much of anything about a rematch other then Hearns could knock him out, who would’ve thought Tommy Hearns could potentially KO someone?
Medical reports prove he had a shoulder issue. Walcott did one of the worst referee performances in sports history and it's not even debatable. I don't think he made excuses for the Marshall loss. The guy fought with a broken jaw until the final bell, something 90% of boxers wouldn't do. Not the same at all.
Duran ballooned up after the Hagler fight, no surprise as he had just gotten a big payday. Duran saw Leonard stop Hearns and Duran had beaten Leonard he didnt think Tommy was a big deal, and wouldnt dedicate himself to getting ready. He should have known better but it is what it is.
Shame Duran is full of excuses, but of course it doesn't detract one iota from his greatness. From what I remember, he may have looked a tad soft against Hearns, not really sure. What I do remember clearly, is Gil Clancy saying over & over that Duran was straight up fighting too tall, and that he needed to get lower. Duran continues to fight upright and gets nailed with the jab to the belly-right hand to the chin and goes down hard. Next round, he is STILL upright, exact same combo lands & good night, Roberto.
Are we to assume Roberto never had sex before the Hearns fight? Or that in all of his wins in all those years he was chaste? Same with Tyson vs. Douglas, the sex excuse only comes up after a loss and people never ask, ‘Well was that really any different from his other fights? Was he completely abstinent except before his losses?
