It is a shame really - I know why (or at least why he says) he has called it quits, but it is the fans that are ultimately missing out. Provided he doesn't come back (which odds on he will) it is going to be a while before we have a new lineal champion. Plus AJ, Usyk, or any other heavyweight contender of this era who hasn't fought Fury already will always be open to the implied asterisks and scrutiny of comments like "well could he have beaten Fury".

 

WBC has announced Fury has 14 days to make his retirement known by writing

Boxing needs to implement a "Fury rule".
If a fighter announces retirement, their record is reset to 0-0 if they come back, so they will need to work their way back up to a title shot with like 15 or so fights.
Using "retirement" as a ducking method needs to have repercussions.
