His apparent lack of respect for training and discipline. Also a very dirty fighter.

Lou Nova beat Lee Ramage, Abe Simon, Tommy Farr, Pat Comiskey, Izzy Singer and Max Baer. Quite a resume if you ask me!

You are mostly right, Tua is better-but it is absolutely not possible that Tua was "far more powerful" than Galento.
Just because Galento had a higher % of body fat until Tua approached it late in his career?
Whoever hit harder it could not be very different.

And Galento with his bull rushes ha at least similar speed as Tua, maybe more.

A boxing match does not mean it is legal, ethical, decent or brave to do anything to win if you can get away with violating the terms of what you agreed to abide by.
To get an unfair advantage over an opponent; & thus if you win the victory may well be effectively STOLEN.

I do not know of redeeming human characteristic Two Ton had to compensate for his vicious behavior-in & out of the ring.
Such as how he harassed Joe Louis at home.
Not bathing so he smelled like garbage to disgust opponents.
Numerous dirty tactics-if he could somehow get away with maiming or killing someone due to cheating, that is OK?
Even if it was you or a family member who had the trouble & expense & trauma of almost losing eyesight?

He maliciously heckled Jackie Gleason & then when challenged to step outside not only did not reveal he was a top professional heavyweight boxer-but knocked him out cold before Gleason could even finish a sentence or the fight had started "fairly".

Galento can be respected for his native ability & toughness.
Not for his work ethic, intelligence, or more importantly, Human Decency.

Good grief! Mike Tyson’s street fighting and ear biting back in the day doesn’t look quite so bad now!
Your post has inspired me to read the book “Galento The Great” to find out more about this guy, because as thuggish as he sounds I’d bet there must have been some redeeming qualities in him. Either way I’ll read up on him and see.

Great, please come back here when finished, start a thread about it, & supply the major takeaways about him.
    Including those elusive virtues!

I suspect there must have been some.
Even for the man who because his Brother threw a beer stein at him in his bar before the Baer fight had an injury that meant he swallowed blood throughout the bout.

Therefor could not implement "his fight" of Major League cheating! :cursing2:

It's people like Galento that make the world of boxing history so colourful and interesting.

Or the man who ate 52 hot dogs before a fight for a bet and was so bloated that his shorts had to be cut open for him to fit in them. Incidentally he won that fight by KO…not sure whether he cheated during that fight or not though. I’m sure the book will cover it.

Yes by all means after reading the book I’ll return to entertain you all with any good qualities I’ve discovered about him. I have just been told by a guy in my gym that he was kind to his mother, but so was Attila The Hun, so that doesn’t count!
