Had Tyson not lost to Buster Douglas this answer would have easily been Tyson vs Holyfield in 1990 which was already signed for. Tyson would have been the undisputed undefeated HW champion and Holyfield was the reigning Undisputed undefeated CW champion whom became the #1 contender at HW.

Instead the logical only answers I can think of is either Hopkins vs Trinidad or Usyk vs Gassiev..

Tyson v Holy pre prison would have been awesome but not no.1 in this category simply because Tyson was considered such a monster pre Douglas and no matter how great Holy was, Tyson was hugely favoured to steam roll him and Holyfield was not known worldwide by the casuals. Evander was my fav fighter back in those days and I won money on him when he beat Mike.

I was a huge Leonard fan and swore blindly that he was the rightful victor when I first watched the fight by multiple rounds. However it's the only fight I know of that everytime I watch it, it get's closer and closer!

Tszyu v Judah was big from a personal stand point, of course it's nowhere near no.1 but they were both on showtime and the fight had been brewing for a couple of years.

You’re underestimating the anticipation for that fight.. That fight was gonna be massive as Holyfield was looked at as the guy with the most potential to dethrone Tyson. He had KO’d Quick Tillis (First fighter that took Tyson to distance only lost 6-4), Pinklon Thomas (ex WBC champion), and Michael Dokes(ex WBA champ) to EARN the #1 contender spot. The fight was already signed as the highest guarantees in the history at the time with both guys agreed to take tuneup bouts in anticipation. Holyfield beat Stewart in his while Mike lost to Buster Douglas.

For reference imagine how big Usyk vs AJ 1 would have been if AJ didn’t lose to Ruiz and Usyk KO’d Ortiz, Parker and Whyte before their fight.

I lived through those times mate, here in Australia only hard core fans knew Holyfield and very few of them thought Holyfield would even get close to a win. Even when Tyson got out of jail and eventually fought Holyfield. I told EVERYBODY that Evander was gonna win and everybody ****ing laughed at me. Well I won money, so I had the last laugh but don't try and re-write history mate. Pre the fight with Douglas, Tyson was viewed as invincible and even if Holyfield was his biggest threat he was given no chance. So how can you say it would have been the biggest fight in history if everybody thinks Tyson is gonna ko Holyfield? To be a hugely anticipated fight, the result needs to be perceived as in the balance.

Lennox Lewis Vs Evander Holyfield 2 fight should at least be mentioned. That was the last time we had an undisputed heavyweight champion.

you can disagree but if you do a simple google search you will see the the other sanctioning body’s didn’t not fully recognize the WBO as a real belt until 2007. So factually that’s correct

because 2007 is when the WBC WBA and IBF acknowledged it as a actual title and needed to become undisputed

Who made the other sanctioning bodies the authority on recognizing a new belt? The WBC and WBA certainly threw a fit and tried their best to shun the IBF when it first came along.

With all due respect, 2007 makes zero sense. That would mean that Bernard Hopkins wasn't the first 4-belt undisputed champion, and he most certainly was. And Jermain was the 2nd. Those are universally accepted facts, so the 2007 claim is simply wrong (regardless of what it says on sites like Wikipedia).

Bernard getting that belt off if Oscar is what legitimized it. He was already undisputed after beating Trinidad unifying the WBC/WBA/IBF in 2001. That’s why he’s the first undisputed in the 4 belt era.. Before then guys would actually drop the WBO before fighting and WBA/WBC/IBF beltholder..
