Has The Usyk V Joshua Fights, Changed Anyone s Opinion, Regarding Older Fighters Being Successful?

& he fat as all hell with no reach
basic Roly fat poly slugger boxer with quick fist only

no sure what was the Usyk was playing for this time .

For the millionth time, Usyk ain't small.
He might appear so compared to behemots like Joshua and Fury, but put him in another era and he'd be one of the biggest guys.
Foreman was called "Big George" in the 70s and he was roughly Usyk's size.

As for your question, no, this fight hasn't changed my perception.
That would of only happened if Joshua would have been beaten by an actual small guy, and one who had a poor skillset or fought in a similar manner to the old timers.

 

Well said, I kept mentioning that myself, it's not like a Frazier sized boxer beat Joshua.

 

He isn't small compared to light heavy and cruiser of the past, but he's a smaller man moving up!
Other wise he's always an heavyweight..

I personally would say of course Foreman was naturally bigger than Usyk.

It appears Foreman’s optimal weight was unwisely suppressed at times - and he was a rock solid 224 lbs for Norton after all. Usyk’s 221 lbs is at a stretch.

Also, while Foreman was listed 6’3”, I would say he was a tad over that height. On the other hand. Usyk is more like 6’2” to 6’2 1/2”.

Having said all this, Usyk isn’t small by 70s standards, certainly falling into the upper size limit for that era.

I think with the increasing size of SHWs there has also been a required increase in the min. size required to remain competitive - at this moment, Usyk appears to represent that min. size.

Given what I see as an accelerated loss of P4P skills with increased size, there may be a cap to viable SHW size = no further net gains with extra size. If that is correct, there would also be a cap to the min. required size to compete with these behemoths.

Are we there yet? Maybe, maybe not but the skill levels at the top end SHW size, as I see it, are well below par absolute - and the success of a guy of Usyk’s size with abundant skills to go is not too surprising.

Ideally though, it’d be nice if Usyk carried a bit more “warn off” power but it’s a stylistic catch 22 given the movement he executes - movement that is required against appreciably larger opposition.

Cheers Pat. Great info. That’s very interesting. Who would’ve guessed that and why did they allow it? - though probably not as crucial since HWs are an open cheque weight wise.

Interesting too since Foreman looked notably bigger than 212 lb Norton imo - one contemporary boxing mag. article describing Norton as looking like a skinny LH by comparison. Obvious hyperbole but the point was there did appear to be a notable size difference.

 

First fight reminded me there's more to HW fights than Size alone.

Since Wlad sceptics have asked where is this current CW who will take over the division, well he's here.

The idea SHWs woll jus cut through smaller men based on size alone is false. Usyk had helped remind me of that first time round.
